The latest on the Senate Republican SEPTA funding crisis
|
Last week, I stood with my fellow lawmakers in the Delaware County Legislative House and Senate Delegations to highlight the damaging effects the budget impasse has had on public transit and K-12 schools.
|
Since then, Gov. Shapiro announced that PennDOT capital funds have been approved, avoiding immediate SEPTA service cuts.
This is a short-term solution. With this funding, SEPTA will be able to maintain existing routes and services for the next two years and restore full service by Sunday, Sept. 14.
However, the 21.5% fare increase is still scheduled to take effect that same day.
It’s very clear that this is not the long-term funding solution SEPTA needs. Transferring capital funds to cover operating expenses, with no commitment to replace them, is not sustainable.
Pennsylvania still needs a fair and adequate state budget to ensure stable, long-term funding for public transit, schools, hospitals, and social services that millions of people rely on every day.

New SNAP reporting mandates
|
As of September 1, new federal rules under this summer’s federal budget bill passed by Congress now require certain SNAP recipients to report their work, education, training, or volunteer hours to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) to keep their benefits.
To guide you through these changes, the Shapiro Administration has created a one-stop resource at dhs.pa.gov/work. You’ll find who must comply, how to submit your hours, and information on possible exemptions.
These reporting requirements will expand further throughout fall 2025. If you’re affected, you should have received a letter from DHS like the example above. Even if you haven’t, please review the details on the DHS website.
If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact my office for assistance.
