Working to preserve emergency care in Delaware County
|
Dear Neighbor,
Last week, I participated in a press conference with the Governor outside of the now-closed Crozer Medical Center.
For the last 3 years, and most immediately in the last few months, we fought the corporate interests of the for-profit, private equity group, Prospect Medical Holdings, to keep Crozer Medical Center open and serving the needs of our community.
We are continuing to do everything we can as a State Delegation with our Governor and County officials to preserve emergency care in Delaware County - but we also must stop this for-profit pillage from happening to any other community in Pennsylvania.
That's why I'm a co-sponsor of the Health Systems Protections Act that will keep private equity out of healthcare in PA.

Rallying for public transportation in Pennsylvania
|
I joined my fellow House and Senate members to rally outside of SEPTA Headquarters on Monday morning. We advocated for increasing public transit funding across the state as SEPTA began their three days of public hearings on their proposed budget, which includes major service cuts and fare increases.
Every day, SEPTA buses, trains and trolleys provide more than 800,000 trips, taking commuters, students, seniors and tourists where they need to go. I stood side-by-side with lawmakers, commuters and transportation advocates for a permanent funding solution for SEPTA!

Delivering for you in Harrisburg
|
This week, my House Democratic colleagues and I passed important bills that will help our neighbors and improve our communities:
We are making it easier for voters to exercise their right to vote and improving the elections process by passing the Voting Rights Protection Act, which makes numerous reforms, including providing options for early voting, increasing access to ballot drop boxes and allowing voters to correct minor errors on a mail-in ballot, as well as allowing election officials to prepare mail-in ballots ahead of Election Day, also known as pre-canvassing (HB 1396).
We protected patients’ health and wallets by requiring health insurance policies to cover medically necessary diagnostic breast exams, including MRI or ultrasound, without patient cost sharing (HB 433), and ensuring that patients are informed by hospitals about financial assistance to avoid medical debt (HB 79).
We are putting money back in pockets of new and established homeowners by helping people save to buy their first home by establishing the First-Time Homebuyer Savings Account Program (HB 818) and allowing mortgage borrowers to buy down their interest rate in order to reduce their monthly payment (HB 1103).
We supported our veterans by raising pensions for veterans with service-connected blindness, paralysis or limb loss (HB 1144).
We stood up for workers by fighting exploitation of construction workers who are often misclassified by employers as independent contractors and therefore denied better wages, benefits and workplace protections (HB 721).

New online security feature launched to prevent SNAP theft
|
The Department of Human Services and the Office of State Inspector General have launched a new EBT card security feature to protect Pennsylvanians who receive SNAP and cash benefits from instances of theft.
Benefit recipients can now lock their EBT cards when they are not in use to protect their benefits from skimming and theft.
There have been several recent instances of SNAP theft in Pennsylvania and nationwide, especially in incidents of card skimming, where SNAP benefits are stolen off EBT cards after they are used at a point-of-sale machine with an attached skimming device.
The new card lock feature is one way individuals can protect their EBT cards while they are not in use. Locking an EBT card blocks all purchases, balance inquiries, and transactions to keep benefits secure.
SNAP and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients can lock and unlock their EBT cards using Conduent’s free, and secure ConnectEBT app, available on Apple and GooglePlay app stores, or via the Connect EBT website.
