My thoughts on Crozer Health's closure; Pet Expo rescheduled!

Dear Neighbor,

I was devastated to hear about the motion to close Crozer Health and all the outpatient facilities licensed with the hospital. Prospect Medical Holdings’ decision is a disgraceful blow to our communities, healthcare workers and every patient who has ever relied on the local hospital system.

Make no mistake, Prospect is willfully closing Crozer Health after state and local officials, regional health systems and philanthropic partners exhausted their ability and financial resources to save the hospital system.

I firmly believe there is no place in our hospital system for private equity. Hospital care should be focused on people’s health, not profits for shareholders. Prospect decided to put profits over patients by putting Crozer’s assets up for auction.

As Crozer demonstrates, privatization and for-profit systems are the problem, not the solution.

Civic Commemoration of the Holocaust

On Wednesday, I joined Governor Josh Shapiro, my fellow members of the House and members of the Senate for the civic commemoration of the Holocaust in Harrisburg. We remembered the millions of survivors and victims of this unspeakable horror.

During this unstable political climate, it’s more important than ever that we gather to remember the victims and honor the survivors of the Holocaust.

Location: Garrettford-Drexel Hill Fire Company: 323 Edmonds Ave., Drexel Hill, PA 19026

In related news, in Harrisburg, I proudly voted to pass House Bill 615, which would expand the current immunity from civil and criminal liability for a food donation that had passed the manufacturer’s expiration date. Apart from infant formula, these dates are not required by law and are largely in place for retailers to know how long to keep a product on the shelf or to let the consumer know the peak date for taste, but they don't necessarily indicate food safety.

The small clarification will correct the current misconception that donating “past date” food could put the donor outside of liability protection. I’m proud to support this legislation, providing a critical link between surplus food and the 1.2 million people in Pennsylvania who are facing food insecurity.

Nominate a teacher for Teacher Appreciation Month in May

May is Teacher Appreciation Month! And while it is still April, I would like to take this time to find the most influential teachers within our community to honor – and I need your help to find them.

Please nominate your favorite teacher to be recognized and celebrate their dedication to students and our communities.

You can help by sending the information to RepBoyd@pahouse.net.

  1. Choose your favorite teacher!
  2. My office will then need the teacher’s first and last name, and the grade, subject and school they teach at (or taught at) – plus please let us know why this teacher is making a difference!

Thinking back on our own childhood, there is at least one teacher we can all remember who either changed our lives or changed our view of the world – now is our chance to say Thank You!

Nominated teachers will receive a Pennsylvania House of Representatives Certification of Recognition and a shout out on social media! Do not wait to nominate your favorite teacher by April 30. Teachers will be honored throughout May.

Touring DCCC’s Southeast Campus

On Monday, I had the pleasure of joining House Speaker Joanna McClinton, Sen. John Kane, and Reps. Gina Curry and Jennifer O’Mara for a tour of Delaware County Community College’s future Southeast Campus.

The college is making incredible strides in renovating its 80,000-square-foot main building to create new opportunities for our community. Once complete, this campus will offer vital programs like computer literacy, GED preparation, and reading/writing classes for English language learners.

This project is a powerful investment in education, equity, and the future of Delaware County. I’m excited to see the positive impact it will have for years to come!
