HARRISBURG, Feb. 4 — State Rep. Tarik Khan, D-Phila., announced legislation today titled Protecting Voter Privacy and Pennsylvania Elections from Political Interference, aimed at safeguarding Pennsylvania’s voter data and election systems from unwanted interference.
“This bill is about protecting voter privacy and making sure our elections are decided by voters, not political pressure,” said Rep. Khan.
Following the 2020 presidential election, President Donald Trump and his allies falsely claimed the election was “stolen,” despite courts, audits, recounts, and investigations finding no evidence of widespread fraud. These false claims can erode trust in elections and have contributed to political pressure on election officials, despite no evidence to support them.
Recent events in Georgia have raised serious concerns about politically motivated efforts to access state-controlled voter data and election materials. Politically motivated attempts to gain access to state-run voter data and election systems raise concerns about election interference, intimidation, and misuse of sensitive voter information. When voter data is treated like a political weapon, it puts voter privacy at risk and makes it harder for election officials to do their jobs without fear or pressure.
Khan’s legislation would confirm state control over voter registration databases and election infrastructure; require a court order before any federal access to voter data; prohibit bulk or fishing-expedition requests; and protect election workers from pressure or retaliation for simply doing their jobs.
“Using voter data as a political weapon puts people’s privacy at risk and makes it harder for election workers to do their jobs without pressure or fear,” Khan said.
“As a nurse, I’ve spent my career looking out for everyday people, and from nurses, teachers, and construction workers to retired grandparents, Pennsylvanians deserve to know their vote will count,” said Khan.
“Pennsylvanians expect elections to be run fairly, transparently, and according to the law. This legislation draws a clear line that our election systems cannot be used as political tools,” said Rep. Chris Pielli, D-Chester.
“Our democracy only works when voters have confidence that our election process is safe, free, and fair,” said Rep. Emily Kinkead, D-Allegheny. “False claims peddled by Trump and his allies around the 2020 election have done tremendous harm to public confidence in the integrity of Pennsylvania elections. This legislation is aimed at preventing interference, protecting election workers and voter data, restoring trust, and reinforcing state control over our elections so that people can participate without fear of pressure or retaliation.”
The legislation is supported by a coalition of lawmakers from across Pennsylvania.
