O’Mara, PA Turnpike announce courtesy parking spots for veterans

Two spaces at all service plazas will be in place by the end of May

HARRISBURG, May 18 — State Rep. Jennifer O’Mara, D-Delaware, today joined officials from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and the Pennsylvania American Legion to unveil dedicated parking spaces for veterans at turnpike service plazas.

Each of the turnpike’s 17 plazas will have two designated veterans parking spaces by the end of this month.

“This came about when I learned that Havre de Grace, Maryland, provides reserved parking spots for veterans,” O’Mara said. “I met with officials at the Pennsylvania Turnpike about doing something similar, and they were eager to get the ball rolling. Now the men and women who served our country will receive a small gesture of appreciation every time they pull into a turnpike plaza. It’s the least they deserve for their sacrifices.”

The Pennsylvania American Legion is covering the costs of signage at each space.

O’Mara added, “I’m grateful to the Turnpike Commission and the American Legion for finding a way to make this happen without legislation and without an extra expenditure by the state. This is a great example of how we can work together in commonsense fashion for the benefit of our commonwealth.”

Today’s announcement was made at a news conference at Valley Forge Service Plaza. O’Mara was joined by Pennsylvania Turnpike CEO Mark Compton and Pennsylvania American Legion Commander Patrick Love.
