Sanchez: State money awarded to modernize traffic signals in Abington Twp.
ABINGTON, July 9 – A $490,320 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation was awarded to Abington Township that will improve two traffic signals at the intersections of Meetinghouse Road, Beverly Road and Fairy Hill Road, as well as Jenkintown Road and Forrest Avenue, state Rep. Ben Sanchez, D-Montgomery, announced today.
The grant – awarded under PennDOT’s Green Light-Go Program – will fund important upgrades to the traffic signaling and help improve safety in the area.
“Modernizing improvements are on the way for these intersections thanks to the reinvestment of state funds,” Sanchez said. “The goal is greater safety and smoother traffic flow for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, and I was pleased to be able to assist in the state’s funding of these efforts.”
“This award continues the township's momentum over the past several years to upgrade outdated signal equipment and increase accessibility and safety at intersections,” Township Manager Richard J. Manfredi said. “These enhancements are also part of a larger project, the Abington-Jenkintown Connections Project, to increase accessibility, stormwater management and safety in the southeast portion of the township. Thank you to Representative Sanchez for his support of our application and for being a visionary in this corridor, and to Commissioner Stuart Winegrad for his leadership in prioritizing and advancing these improvements.”
“I wish to thank Representative Sanchez for his unyielding support for the Abington community, for understanding the needs and goals of our residents, and for his continued promotion of safety and transportation enhancements to improve the lives of the citizens of the 153rd District,” Ward 7 Commissioner Stuart Winegrad said.
The grant is part of a package of more than $15.6 million awarded for signal upgrades in 50 municipalities statewide under the Green Light-Go program.
Green Light-Go grants reimburse municipalities for updates to improve traffic signal efficiency and operation. The grants can be used for projects such as installation of LED technology; traffic signal retiming; developing special event plans; and remote safety and functionality monitoring of traffic signals; all by upgrading signals to the latest technologies.
