Sanchez announces more funding for Abington’s Baederwood Park

ABINGTON, Sept. 2 – Rep. Ben Sanchez announced that Abington Township will receive $922,822 in state funding to support infrastructure improvements at Baederwood Park, including construction of a footpath and restoration of a riparian buffer damaged in 2021 by Hurricane Ida.
The funding, awarded through the Commonwealth’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery program, will help Abington Township continue its long-term recovery from the devastating storm and strengthen the park and surrounding area against future severe weather.
“This project is about more than repairing damage — it’s about making sure Abington is better prepared for the next major storm,” Sanchez said. “Restoring the riparian buffer will help protect the park and surrounding area, while the new footpath will make Baederwood Park more accessible and enjoyable for residents. These are the kinds of investments that make our communities safer, stronger and more sustainable for years to come.”
The grant is part of more than $1.2 million in CDBG-DR funding announced by the Shapiro Administration for two projects in Montgomery County. The grants support long-term recovery efforts in federally designated disaster areas impacted by Hurricane Ida.
"Abington is very proud to be able to continue its commitment to preserving and maintaining natural recreation space,” Abington Township Manager Chris Christman said. “Not only will this project support a sustainable park at Baederwood, but it will also further mitigate the storm water implications from another significant rain event like Hurricane Ida from adversely impacting our residents and infrastructure. We are thankful to Gov. Shapiro, Rep. Sanchez and all our elected officials for supporting this program and Abington Township."
The CDBG-DR program provides funding for long-term recovery activities, including infrastructure improvements, housing rehabilitation, mitigation and other efforts designed to address the impacts of federally declared disasters.
The Shapiro administration invested $18.6 million through the CDBG-DR program last year for 16 projects in federally designated disaster areas in Bucks, Delaware and Montgomery counties.
Sanchez represents the 153rd District, which includes Rockledge and parts of Abington and Upper Dublin in Montgomery County.
