House Committee OKs two bipartisan Rabb bills protecting homeowners

Legislation to address deed fraud, safeguard ownership of inherited property clears committee

HARRISBURG, June 6 – Protecting vulnerable homeowners from fraudulent deeds and the forced sale of inherited property, state Rep. Chris Rabb announced today two of his bills with Rep. Tim Bonner, R-Mercer/Butler, advanced out of the House Housing and Community Development Committee Wednesday with strong bipartisan support.

“It’s clear there is more than enough support on both sides of the aisle to get both of these bills across the finish line,” said Rabb, D-Phila. “I want to thank my colleagues for advancing these two pieces of legislation that would make critical, long-overdue updates to our laws around housing. Let’s get this done for Pennsylvanians.”

Rabb said that under current state law, Pennsylvanians who die without a will have their assets divided by a judge, and H.B. 1498 is designed to address that.

On the second bill, Rabb said H.B. 1406 is necessary due to the lack of a law specifically stopping fraudulent property transfers, which is a growing problem in urban, suburban and rural areas throughout Pennsylvania.

Both bills are scheduled for votes by the full House on Wednesday, June 11.
