Green announces over $1M in funding for local park projects

Grants support local economy and recreational spaces

HARRISBURG, Oct. 8 – State Rep. Roni Green, D-Phila. announced today that three grants totaling $1,075,000 have been awarded to community projects in North and West Philadelphia.

The funding was awarded through Community Conservation Partnerships Program grants, which are managed by the Pa. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.

The projects are:

  • $500,000 to the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation for rehabilitation of more than 4 miles of Schuylkill River Trail from North 25th Street to the East Falls Bridge.
  • $500,000 to the Philadelphia Managing Director’s Office for the rehabilitation of Carousel House Recreation Center, including for renovating the parking area and community gardens; installation of play equipment with required safety surfacing; ADA access, landscaping, project signage, and other improvements.
  • $75,000 to the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation to prepare a master site development plan for the 614-acre Schuylkill River corridor within Fairmount Park.

“I’m thrilled to announce this funding for our communities to support and update our outdoor spaces,” Green said. “Our area of Philadelphia is blessed with amazing and popular recreational spaces that are not only important to our neighbors and families but also support our economy by driving tourism dollars to our local businesses, like our fabulous restaurants and shops.”

Green also pointed to two other grants that were awarded to impact areas across Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania:

  • $150,000 to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to coordinate Urban and Community Forestry in the city of Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania; engage communities in planting trees and building local tree stewardship capacity in Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.
  • $130,000 to the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation to coordinate and fund an Urban and Community Forestry workforce development program in the city of Philadelphia.

These Community Conservation Partnerships Program Grants are intended to connect Pennsylvanians with the outdoors by supporting recreational improvements, natural-resource conservation, and community-revitalization efforts.
