Northeast Philly state Reps and city officials celebrate PennDOT repaving project for Rhawn Street

Today, Northeast Philadelphia state Representatives Ed Neilson, Pat Gallagher and Sean Dougherty hosted a news conference at the intersection of Rhawn Street and Lexington Avenue to celebrate a repaving project for Rhawn Street.

This PennDOT project will resurface 4.8 miles of Rhawn Street beginning Wednesday, April 22. Additionally, another resurfacing project covering two miles of Holme Avenue is set to begin in May. Both projects are in Gallagher’s legislative district.

“This roadway, stretching from State Road to Huntingdon Pike, has seen better days,” Gallagher said. “For the residents, commuters, and school communities who rely on this corridor every day, the wear and tear is obvious. It’s long overdue for attention. Rhawn Street has been in need of resurfacing.

“When this project is complete, it will mean safer travel and less wear and tear on vehicles for our neighborhoods that rely on this roadway every day, he said.

Gallagher was joined by his fellow PA House colleagues who represent parts of Northeast Philadelphia, Reps. Sean Dougherty and Ed Neilson, whose districts also contain segments of Rhawn Street.

“You can’t think of Northeast Philadelphia and not think of Rhawn Street, it runs through the heart of it from the river to Rockledge,” Dougherty said. “This repaving project will allow commuters to continue using it to travel on for years to come.”

"Rhawn Street is one of the most travelled streets in Northeast Philly," Neilson said. "I'm happy to see this project move forward - it's another step to improve quality of life and safety issues in our neighborhood."

The state legislators were joined by Philadelphia Councilmember Mike Driscoll, who said he is “happy to support our state elected officials- Reps. Dougherty, Gallagher and Neilson- to work with PennDOT in repaving Rhawn Street between State Road and Oxford Avenue in the next 2 months.”

During the news conference, the speakers outlined details of this repaving project, including
