Mullins announces over $1M in state funding for several local community improvement projects

HARRISBURG, May 25 – State Rep. Kyle Mullins, D-Lackawanna, today announced state funding totaling over $1 million has been awarded to benefit over a dozen community and economic development projects that will benefit residents of the 112th Legislative District. The funding was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through the Monroe County Local Share Account program. 

Municipal governments and local organizations depend on grant programs like this to ensure a strong local economy and to keep our communities safe for residents and visitors,” Mullins said. “I am proud to work alongside my local legislative colleagues in our tireless work to secure critical funding for our area. I would like to thank state Sen.-elect Marty Flynn, D-Lackawanna, and my House colleagues state Reps. Mike Carroll, D-Luzerne/Lackawanna, and Bridget M. Kosierowski, D-Lackawanna, for their support of these worthy projects.”  

Mullins said the grants include: 

  • $250,000 for the Women’s Resource Center for critical facility upgrades that will significantly enhance the center’s ability to protect victims of domestic and sexual violence. 
  • $110,000 for the development of a Pre-Kindergarten Center of Excellence by the Scranton Lackawanna Human Development Agency. The prospective center at the Holy Rosary School will provide educational and daycare services for children of low-income area families. 
  • $130,000 for VFW Theodore Winter Post #25 for the next phase of its renovation project including installation of a fire suppression system and handicapped-accessible restrooms. 
  • $125,000 for the Scranton City Emergency Services Center for the installation of an HVAC system.  
  • $30,000 for the Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore to renovate and revitalize the inpatient unit. 
  • $100,000 for the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science and Art to replace three HVAC units and renovate windows throughout an entire wing of the museum.  
  • $50,000 for the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple for public health and safety upgrades. 
  • $100,000 for Archbald Borough to acquire 3.5 acres of land on Export Lane as a proposed site for a new municipal building.  
  • $49,985 for Jessup Hose Company #2 for the acquisition of a hydraulic lifting stretcher for the ambulance service.  
  • $100,000 for the Scranton Lackawanna Industrial Building Company for an advertising campaign to target and attract remote workers to Lackawanna County.  
  • $32,729 for the Ronald McDonald House Neighborhood Initiative for the demolition and clearing of 329 and 333 Wheeler Ave. in Scranton. 
  • $25,000 for the South Scranton Little League to make several renovations to the complex including ADA restrooms and pathways.  
  • $15,000 for the Connell Park Little League for the acquisition of various ground maintenance equipment.  

The Local Share Account funds from casinos located in host or contiguous counties are distributed by the Department of Community and Economic Development and are designed to support economic development, job training, community improvement and public interest projects.
