Our Disability & Mental Health Summit was last week, and by any and all accounts, it was a resounding success! More than 1,000 people walked through the door to attend our multiple-day event, and it was great to see so many people enjoying our information sessions. Our keynote presentation focused on the importance of Medicaid and our bipartisan, bicameral Legislative Panel talked about special education for kids in placement and possibly expanding prescription privileges to help reduce mental health access issues.
We had multiple resource fairs and brought together about 170 organizations over the three days. This was brought about by a tremendous partnership with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Pittsburgh Public Schools, and most of the schools throughout the South Hills. Hundreds of students had a chance to work on their post-secondary options, which is always a key component of our event!
For the first time ever, we added a resource fair just on assistive technology which showed the latest innovations in the field. Assistive technology is life-altering for so many, and we must make sure people have access to maximize success in work and in life! We again brought in our friends from Creative Citizen Studios who showcased the beautiful work of autistic artists from across the county, and we worked with the Special Olympics to highlight the fight for inclusion in every aspect of life in Allegheny County. We were also joined by Steeler great Ryan Shazier, who shared his incredible story about perseverance and the difference physical therapy can make.
I would like to give a special thank you to our planning committee who again helped us design the event program and to Upper St. Clair School District, the AIU, and PPS for supporting our student initiative. Finally, a big thanks to CCAC who was a tremendous host for this year’s Summit. Our keynote and legislative sessions will soon be available online for those who wish to review them.
Upper St. Clair Community Day
As a reminder, with our office returning to normal constituent hours, we will also be back at USC Community Day this Saturday, May 17th. We will be at the Opening Ceremony at 10 a.m., then the parade, and we will operate a booth throughout the event that afternoon. Be sure to stop by and say hi!
