Legislation to provide support to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren passes the PA House with bipartisan support

HARRISBURG, Nov. 19 – The Pennsylvania House today passed legislation that could provide assistance to the more than 235,000 grandparents across the state who are responsible for meeting their grandchildren’s daily needs due to their parents’ opioid use disorder.

House Bill 1528, introduced by state Rep. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, would use Opioid Settlement funds to provide grants to local Area Agencies on Aging enabling them to assess and assist grandparents who need short-term, emergency support to meet the personal care needs of grandchildren living with them.

“For far too long, grandfamilies who are the primary caretakers of their beloved grandchildren have gone without the support they deserve. This bill will change that,” said Madden. “Grandparents who step up when a parent cannot deserve to be celebrated -- and provided with the help they need.”

The bill passed 200-3 and now moves to the state Senate for consideration.
