Protecting Our Communities from Gun Violence

Dear Neighbor,

Last week, there was a tragedy in York County when an armed suspect who was being served a warrant for domestic violence-related charges shot and murdered three police officers from Northern York County Regional Police Department -- Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser. All were struck and fatally wounded. A deputy sheriff and another officer were also struck and sustained serious injury. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania mourns their loss.

This is not the first violent attack in Pennsylvania this year. Most Pennsylvanians support common sense gun safety measures and want to ensure that individuals who are a danger to themselves and others cannot gain access to deadly weapons.

Yesterday, four bills passed out of the House Judiciary Committee that would move Pennsylvania closer to enacting common sense gun safety measures. I support these bills and will vote yes when they are brought to the House floor.

  • HB 1593 – Requires a background check for all gun purchases.
  • HB 1859 – Creates extreme risk protection orders, also known as “red flag laws,” to help prevent tragedies before they happen.
  • HB 1099 – Bans ghost (3-D printed) guns and undetectable weapons.
  • HB 1866 – Prohibits devices that convert semi-automatic firearms into machine guns.

These bills are critical to protecting our communities from gun violence and giving law enforcement stronger tools to keep Pennsylvanians safe. I am hopeful that my colleagues in the House will move swiftly to pass this legislation.

Crozer Bankruptcy Update

Please note that there has been an update to the date for Prospect’s next bankruptcy hearing. The new hearing date is scheduled for this Thursday, September 25, at 10:30 a.m.

It is not unusual for courts to change hearing dates. As such, I encourage you to continuously check the website Prospect Medical Holdings has created to share information with the public that includes court documents and hearing dates, including a link to watch the upcoming hearings which can be located here: https://cases.omniagentsolutions.com/?clientId=3725 and https://us-courts.webex.com/meet/jerniga.

New Public Health Initiative

The Pennsylvania Department of Health recently announced that Pennsylvania will join neighboring states and New York City in launching the Northeast Public Health Collaborative. This voluntary coalition brings together public health agencies and leaders from across the Northeast including Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island to strengthen public health and improve how we respond to challenges.

Each state will keep its independence, but by working together the members can share resources, coordinate services, and respond more effectively to health challenges.

It is also focused on advancing community health, strengthening trust in vaccines and science-based medicine to guide public health. This effort is about making sure every resident has the tools, information, and support they need to stay healthy and safe.

Behind the Scenes at the Linc

The Eagles have had a great start to their season and “Go Birds!” is a rally cry that unites us all. Earlier this month, I joined Representative Fiedler and members of the Philadelphia and Southeast Delegations for a tour of Lincoln Financial Field. We had the chance to explore the press box, interview room, locker room, and even step onto the field. It was a fun and memorable experience seeing firsthand where our reigning Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champions play. E-A-G-L-E-S!

A Great Day at the Senior Expo

Last Thursday, I hosted my annual Senior Expo, one of my favorite events each year!

Participants joined us at Brookhaven Borough Hall to connect with state, federal, and local resources, and many seniors even completed their SEPTA Senior Key Cards on the spot. We also offered a flu and COVID-19 vaccine clinic to help keep our community healthy.

One of the best parts of the day was celebrating milestone birthdays– including honoring Ruth Heisner, who will be 100 years old this year. I also had the pleasure of recognizing the 50th wedding anniversary of Rosa and Ronald Bernard.

Thank you to everyone who came out and participated, including our wonderful vendors who helped make the day such a success!

Welcome, Dr. Johnston!

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Russell Johnston, the new Superintendent of the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District. We had a thoughtful conversation about the importance of securing strong and sustainable funding for education, and our shared commitment to supporting the students, families, and educators who make this community thrive.

I look forward to working with Dr. Johnston and the entire WSSD team as we continue this dialogue and work together to ensure every student has the resources and opportunities they deserve.

Community Connections

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of joining a Coffee and Community event hosted by Individuals Aiding in Emergencies Foundation (IAE) in Aston Township.

IAE's mission is to support individuals and families who are struggling to access basic hygiene and household care products. Through collection drives and partnerships with local organizations, they help provide essentials like baby wipes, diapers, paper towels, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, and more.

This team is doing incredible work to ensure families across Delco have access to the everyday items we depend on.

I'm grateful for their commitment to serving our community.

Fall Fun in Ridley Township

It was a beautiful day for the Ridley Fall Fest at the Ridley Township Public Library and Resource Center. I had a great time meeting with community members and seeing so many people and pets enjoying activities, vendors and fall fun!

Cost Increases to Pennie in 2026

Beginning in 2026, many Pennie enrollees will face higher health insurance costs. One major reason is the expiration of the federal enhanced tax credits, which have helped lower the cost of coverage since 2021. These enhanced tax credits are set to end on December 31, 2025, unless Congress acts to extend them.

Without these credits, premiums are expected to rise significantly – by at least 82% for many enrollees, with some facing even higher increases.

If you are currently enrolled through Pennie, you will receive communication about these upcoming changes. Please make sure your contact information is up to date, so you don’t miss important updates.

You can start exploring other plans to find one that fits your needs. The 2026 open enrollment period begins November 1, 2025, for coverage starting in 2026. You can also go to pennie.com/connect to find Pennie-certified assisters and brokers by your ZIP code.

If you use Pennie, you can visit https://pennie.com/costs/ to see how your coverage will be affected.

I also encourage you to reach out to your federal elected officials to share how these changes could impact you and your family. There is legislation pending in Washington D.C. right now aimed at helping to keep this health care option affordable. Hearing directly from constituents helps them understand how important affordable health care coverage is to our communities.
