Dear neighbor,
I have been closely monitoring the situation at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and am working closely with all parties involved, including the offices of Gov. Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, to prevent a disorderly closure. We are working hard to support the dedicated staff who continue providing care to our community under very challenging conditions. I also want to make sure that you are informed of what’s happening.
Yesterday Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge George Pagano signed an order officially appointing FTI Consulting Inc. as the receiver to take control of the operations of Prospect Medical Holdings and Prospect Crozer LLC for a period of 30 days, retroactive to Feb. 14. While the receivership was approved by a Texas bankruptcy judge earlier this month, this official order was necessary to empower the Receiver and move the process forward.
Over the 30-day period, until March 16, FTI Consulting (the Receiver) will be evaluating the hospital system’s financial condition and the needs of the system moving forward. There is a chance that this 30-day period could be extended by a judge because there is an awful lot of information for the Receiver to unravel.
The Receiver will use $10.2 million previously committed by Gov. Shapiro and $9.8 million committed from Delaware County via the Human Services Block Grant to keep operations going at Crozer-Chester Medical Center during this period of time.
I will continue to keep you updated on this important issue in our community.
Federal Funds for PA Unfrozen
|
Governor Josh Shapiro announced yesterday that all $2.1 billion in Congressionally-appropriated federal funding owed to Pennsylvania that was identified in the lawsuit he filed against the Trump Administration on Feb. 13 has been unfrozen.
This is great news given the uncertainty with many agencies and departments at the federal level right now. This $2.1 billion that was already legally approved by Congress was crucial to ensuring that Pennsylvania has the resources necessary to, in the Governor’s own words, “prevent sinkholes and make abandoned mines safe, plug abandoned wells leaking toxic chemicals into our communities and reduce energy costs for homeowners and ensure that the water flowing to Pennsylvanians’ faucets is clean and pure.”
For more information, visit Gov Shapiro Update Federal Funding Freeze | Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
The federal funding freeze for these and other programs have generated a lot of calls and emails from our neighbors who are worried about the programs their families and communities rely on. I share the concerns of my neighbors and am grateful to Gov. Shapiro for his leadership on ensuring the continuity of service and care for Pennsylvanians. Yesterday’s victory also shows that your advocacy is working, because we were able to reverse a decision that would have been bad for Pennsylvania.
Please continue your advocacy and share your concerns with our federal lawmakers. This is especially important as they consider a budget in Washington that would cut Medicaid and SNAP benefits, which provide essential support to many local children and senior citizens.

State Grant to Improve Walkability in Nether Providence Twp.
|
More great grant news for our district! I have been working with Nether Providence for many years to build pedestrian infrastructure to make our roads safer and identify state funding that can help. On Monday, $176,112 in state grant funding was awarded to the township for additional sidewalks in the community.
The state funding will be used for the construction of sidewalks on Providence Road between East Rose Valley Road and Putters Lane. The sidewalk construction will link the completed East Rose Valley Sidewalk Project (2022) and the recently completed section of Providence Road from Copples Lane to East Rose Valley Road (2024).

I visited Delaware County Technical School in Aston to celebrate Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month and hear from students about the impact of the pre-apprenticeship programs that are preparing them for their future. The student tour guides did a great job of explaining why they chose DCTS and how their experience will help them meet their future career goals.

Delco Children First Panel
|
I recently joined Children First at the Helen Kate Furness Library in Wallingford to lead a panel discussion with local parents and a Delco Superintendent on issues facing kids and families in Delaware County after the release of the new report, “A Decade of Stalled Progress: Opportunity Stunted.” The report outlines the health care, early learning and family supports needed for Delaware County children. You can read the report here.

I was at Strath Haven High School this morning for the Delco Hi-Q semifinals at a meet between Strath Haven, Radnor and Penncrest. Congratulations to Strath Haven on their win and all three teams for performing well! I am always impressed by the incredible talent of our students.

The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime. Please consider donating if you are able!
