Kenyatta calls for action on commonsense gun reform after mass shooting in Fairmount Park

After a shooting in the Lemon Hill section of Fairmount Park which needlessly claimed the lives of two people and wounded nine more, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta released the following statement:

“What is it going to take before we can have a serious conversation about the constant threat of guns looming in our city? How many people need their lives stolen, how many families need to be destroyed by the impulsive pull of a gun trigger?

“Once again, I am left sick and heartbroken for our city. Hundreds of our loved ones, friends and neighbors come together for a Memorial Day gathering in a beautiful, historic part of Fairmount Park, instead they were traumatized, wounded and killed with wartime ammunition.

“The gun violence in Philadelphia continues to be perpetuated by an array of firearms on our streets that leave no trace or accountability such as ghost guns. These types of horrific events will continue to escalate as reports come out that one of these shooters had a modified gun switch to increase the number of injuries, chaos and carnage.

“I will continue to fight for commonsense gun reform for my city; it’s too late for gentle conversations and asking politely. Philadelphians deserve to celebrate freely, without fear of becoming another victim or even worse, statistics.

“The time to act is now – truthfully it’s far past time – but we need to get serious and start the conversation.”
