What a summer it has been here in Philadelphia! From hosting America’s 250th birthday, to showcasing our city’s passion for sports with the FIFA World Cup and MLB All-Star Game, there has been much to celebrate. Even in record-breaking heat, we came through hosting these remarkable events and the city has shined.

Last week, 10 different projects within the district received a total of $5.5 million in funding from the Commonwealth’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. The program provides for the funding, acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects.

With this funding, we’ll be able to see major progress on projects like the Penns Landing Park Pavilion, a reconstruction of the playground at Franklin Square, and an expansion of services at the Philly House homeless shelter. I’d like to thank the Commonwealth for the assistance in building a better Philadelphia!

Carpenters’ Hall hosted the third Young People’s Continental Congress (YPCC) this week. Held at the home of the nation’s first Continental Congress in 1774, this event engages National History Day as its lead educational partner to produce a one-of-a-kind program for students and teachers from across the United States and its territories.

It’s hard to imagine that having HIV has been treated as a crime in Pennsylvania, and during this budget season, I, along with allies, have been working to decriminalize having the disease. We began hearings tackling this dated issue back in 2021, fighting against the obscure 1990 Ryan White Act that was still being used to discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community.

This week, Senate Bill 45 was signed into law by Gov. Shapiro, removing a provision that allowed those living with HIV to face more severe criminal penalties solely based on their HIV status.

I was proud to stand in support of my colleagues to get SB 45 over the finish line and penalties based on HIV status off the books.
