Green bill to make parking fees transparent headed to governor’s desk

PA Senate approves bill 49-1; would protect renters from unexpected costs

HARRISBURG, Oct. 20 – A bill sponsored by state Rep. Roni Green, D-Phila., that would require transparency of residential parking fees for tenants has been approved by the Pennsylvania state Senate and is headed to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s desk for his signature.

House Bill 344 would require landlords to define parking availability and the associated fees to prospective tenants before they sign a lease.

Green said transparency is needed so people aren’t stuck with unexpected parking fees after moving into a new home.

“This will empower tenants to hold their landlords accountable if they were unaware of required parking fees when they signed their lease,” Green said.

“This bill is looking out for renters who are already facing unbearably high housing costs. Unexpected parking fees added to monthly expenses are unethical at best and can, in extreme cases, cause people to lose their housing. I’m proud to finally get this measure to the governor’s desk. This will help people across the state keep a roof over their heads and not be forced out due to surprise costs.”

Green said the measure would create accountability and provide recourse by allowing parking fee disputes to be heard in court, enhancing protections for renters throughout Pennsylvania.

The bill was approved unanimously in the House in April and by a 49-1 vote in the Senate today and now goes to the governor’s desk where he is expected to sign it.
