House OKs two Neilson bills to promote safer roads

This week, two bills aimed to make Pennsylvania roads safer passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, according to House Transportation Committee Chairman Ed Neilson, author of both bills.

House Bill 2336 would require PennDOT to include information for new drivers about safe driving habits in work zones, including a question on the driver’s license examination test.

“One of my top priorities as chair of the House Transportation Committee is to make Pennsylvania roads safer for everyone. Education is key to preventing mistakes and reducing harm in any situation. By requiring new drivers to be aware of safe driving through work zones, we are protecting our dedicated road workers while they maintain our roads, bridges and highways,” Neilson said.

House Bill 2337 would give cities in Pennsylvania the option to enact local ordinances with stronger penalties for off-road vehicles used on city streets, improving quality of life and safety for residents.

“There are counties throughout the commonwealth where riding a dirtbike or off-road vehicles is appropriate and doesn’t harm residents’ quality of life, but this activity can be dangerous and harmful in other parts of Pennsylvania,” Neilson said. “For instance, the City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Police Department have requested stronger penalties due to major inconveniences that causes traffic congestion and excess noise – but more importantly – they drive recklessly, weaving in between cars and even riding on sidewalks and medians, posing incredible risk to pedestrians and cyclists. But Philadelphia is not the only city in the commonwealth asking for this measure.

“House Bill 2337 would ensure that local municipalities are allowed to make the decision about how to keep their residents safe and undisturbed in their community,” he said.

Both bills are headed to the Senate for consideration.
