Bipartisan lawmakers gather to create a pro-housing agenda for Pennsylvania

Today, state Reps. Jared Solomon, Joe Hogan, John Inglis, and Abby Major introduced a new, bipartisan package of legislation aimed at tackling Pennsylvania’s housing crisis. The proposed measures focus on removing local barriers to development, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and establishing comprehensive housing policy for the state.

“Pennsylvania, like much of the nation, is facing a housing crisis. Homes are too expensive, and people -- young and old alike -- are being priced out of the market,” said Solomon. “Today, we are working collaboratively to ensure all Pennsylvanians have an affordable place to live and raise their families.”

Solomon noted that restrictive zoning and parking requirements, combined with a 42% inflation increase in the housing market following the COVID-19 pandemic, have worsened the crisis.

“With higher inflation comes increased monthly payments, taxes, and insurance,” Solomon added. “We are here today to put forward a pro-housing agenda for Pennsylvania.”

“For too long, our state has made it difficult for developers to invest in our communities,” said Inglis. “Other states, from Colorado and California to Texas, Florida, and North Carolina, have cut government red tape to spur housing development. It’s time Pennsylvania does the same. The time for affordable, abundant housing in our state is now.”

The lawmakers emphasized that cutting red tape and incentivizing localities to create housing units will benefit millions of hardworking Pennsylvanians, helping renters achieve the dream of homeownership.

“This package addresses root causes that have driven up housing costs over the years,” said Major. “If Pennsylvania is going to remain an economic leader in the Northeast, we must ensure housing is attainable so we can attract and retain a world-class workforce. I stand with my colleagues in removing barriers and working with local officials to create more affordable housing options.”

“Every person deserves a safe place to call home, yet far too many Pennsylvanians lack access to this basic human right,” Solomon concluded. “Today was a call to action for all of us to work together to solve the housing crisis. This is an issue we can all agree on -- people deserve to live with dignity.
