Burgos applauds PECO grant announcement for customers to pay off overdue utility bills

HARRISBURG, July 31 – State Rep. Danilo Burgos, D-Phila., who is chairman of the PA House Consumer Protection, Technology & Utilities Committee, shared an announcement from PECO today that grants will be available for low- and middle-income customers to help them pay off their overdue utility bills.

Beginning Aug. 4, PECO customers will be able to apply for assistance through the temporary PECO Customer Relief Fund. Qualifying customers will receive a grant of $500, which will appear as a credit on their bill.

“This program offers crucial relief to residents across Philadelphia,” Burgos said. “With the absence of LIHEAP cooling grants this year and extreme heat across the region, I’m pleased to share tangible assistance for those in need.”

The funds are available to eligible limited- to middle-income households located in the PECO service area. To qualify, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Be a current PECO residential electric and/or natural gas customer.
  • Have a past-due balance of no more than $2,000 or, along with a customer co-payment, can bring their balance down to $2,000
  • Not have received a grant from this program previously.
  • Have no theft-of-service charges on their PECO account in the past 12 months.
  • Have a household annual income between 151% and 300% of the Federal Poverty Level.

The program will be available through Dec. 31, 2025, or until available funds are exhausted. Applications will be processed in a first-come, first-served order. Residents can visit this webpage on Aug. 4 for a link to the online application.

“The PECO Customer Relief Fund is more than just financial assistance; it’s a lifeline for Philadelphians during an extremely hot summer. Helping families stay cool and comfortable is a vital step toward a healthier and safer community,” Burgos said.

The relief fund was made possible thanks to a charitable contribution by Exelon, PECO’s parent company, to the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. It’s designed to support limited- to middle-income customers who may not otherwise quality for existing energy assistance programs.
