Rabb highlights need for Shale Gas Operations Transparency Act

Bill needed in response to U.S. Supreme Court ruling

HARRISBURG, June 30 – State Rep. Chris Rabb, D-Phila., denounces the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision that the Environmental Protection Agency lacked broad statutory authority to curb greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.

With this ruling, Rabb said he believes there’s no better time to reintroduce the Shale Gas Operations Transparency Act.

The decision of the U.S. Supreme Court severely weakens the power of the EPA authorized by Congress to address the dangerous impact of fracked gas production in the commonwealth.

Rabb stated, “We must act - while the Court ruling limits the EPA’s ability to regulate climate change, we can pass legislation on the state level to require that those corporations who enter rural communities to drill for shale gas are held account by comprehensive transparency measures my bill would institute if enacted into law. Local residents harmed by fracking and the people of Pennsylvania have a right to know the implications of the operations of these frackers on the built and natural environment of our state.”
