White Cane Safety Day

The white cane is often viewed as a symbol of vision loss, but it is also a symbol of independence. It allows individuals with vision loss to navigate the world freely.

Consequently, Pennsylvania law requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians who are blind and using a visible white cane. However, that is easier said than done.

Blindness and severe visual impairment affect approximately 300,000 of our fellow Pennsylvanians, yet many people are unaware of the law requiring drivers to stop or yield to pedestrians using a white cane. More education is needed on the proper use of the white cane, which both provides independence for pedestrians who are blind and protects them from accidents.

This is why I introduced a resolution—now adopted by the House of Representatives—officially designating October 15 as White Cane Safety Day in Pennsylvania.

By raising awareness of the white cane's role in promoting safety and independence for people who are blind or vision-impaired, we can make Pennsylvania a safer place for everyone.
