Shapiro Signs Legislation to Repeal Sunday Hunting Ban

Last week, Governor Shapiro signed House Bill 1431 into law, repealing the ban on Sunday hunting in the state of Pennsylvania. This law will not only give Pennsylvania hunters more time in the woods and flexibility to participate in one of America’s oldest traditions but also will provide a public service in helping to manage the wildlife population and ensure the future of wildlife conservation.

This is a win for Pennsylvania farmers. This measure will assist farmers in controlling deer populations, protect their crops, and support long-term sustainability of agriculture in the state.

Shapiro Signs AI Forgery Bill into Law

In addition to the repeal on Sunday hunting, Governor Shapiro also signed into law Senate Bill 649 which makes it a third-degree felony for scammers to use artificial intelligence (AI) to generate fake voices, images, or videos in order to injure, exploit, or scam Pennsylvanians.

This law will give law enforcement the power they need to hold scammers and those who attempt to defraud Pennsylvanians accountable. While AI can be used for good, this law will help crack down on nefarious AI usage and protect consumers from fraud in the growing digital age.

The PA Department of Aging, PA Department of Banking and Securities, and the PA Insurance Department (PID) are leading coordinated efforts to defend consumers, families, and older adults from AI-generated fraud through education events and programs on AI and scams, as well as helping to return money to harmed consumers. The PID is helping by ensuring that AI is used responsibly throughout the insurance industry.

A key point to remember is to verify calls or offers that sound too good to be true.

Applications Now Open for Local School District Rebates

Did you apply for your PA Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR) and receive your check or direct deposit? If so and you reside in the Abington, Upper Moreland, or Hatboro-Horsham School Districts, you may be eligible to apply for a local school district rebate as well!

To be eligible, you must have first applied for and received the 2024 rebate from the state. If you live in the Upper Moreland and Abington School Districts, only homeowners can apply. If you live in the Hatboro-Horsham School District, both homeowners and renters can apply. The Lower Moreland School District unfortunately does not have a local rebate program.

Our office can assist with school district rebate applications. To apply, you must have proof of receiving your 2024 rebate from the state (a copy of your paper check or proof of the direct deposit on a bank statement) as well as a copy of your 2024 PA-1000 (PTRR) application.

Give my office a call to make sure you have everything you need to apply and to set up an appointment!

Abington Township Awarded PHARE Funds

Abington Township announced last week that they are recipients of 2025 PHARE (Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement) funding from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA). These funds will be used to maintain current affordable housing as well as improve home safety and accessibility for older adult residents.

This award will specifically be used to launch a new initiative – The Older Adults Trip and Fall Prevention Program - focused on installing mobility modifications for income-qualified older adults to allow them to safely remain independent in their homes.

I am fully committed to the safety of communities in our district, especially our older adults. Congratulations to Abington Township on being awarded this funding that will make such an impact on our senior community.
