Deasy announces $325,000 in Allegheny County gaming grants

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 26 – A total of $325,000 from the Allegheny County Gaming Economic Tourism Fund will support replacing staircases in Crafton and renovating the Casa San Jose building, according to state Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny. The following amounts were awarded: $200,000 to Crafton Borough for the first phase of its program to replace deteriorating staircases. The work will involve replacing 195 concrete or wooden stairs with new concrete, associated cheek walls and landings, handrail, retaining walls and chain link fence. The project also includes site preparation, traffic control, erosion and sediment control, and site cleanup. $125,000 to renovate the Casa San Jose building at 1602-1606 Broadway Avenue. The project includes renovating the floors, wall systems, ceilings, doors and hardware, kitchen cabinetry and food heating equipment, new HVAC, new electric system upgrade, new LED lighting, fire alarm and fire sprinkler installation, telephone/data network installation, plumbing installation, stair and elevator addition, improvements to the exterior shell, new windows, and storefront entrance system. “I’m pleased to see these investments will make important improvements in these communities,” Deasy said. “Casa San Jose provides important resources for the growing Hispanic community. Deasy: Rushed hearing on constitutional amendment to privatize state liquor system leads to more confusion

HARRISBURG, Jan. 24 – Following today’s meeting of the Pennsylvania House Liquor Control Committee, Democratic Chair Dan Deasy said he stands against legislation that calls for voters to decide the business future of Pennsylvania’s Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores through a constitutional amendment. “Asking a simple question on a ballot for a complex issue is a disaster in the making. It’s deceptive, and I fear it would result in even more confusion and frustration for Pennsylvanians,” said Deasy, D-Allegheny. “It’s premature because there is nothing in place to address how that privatization would work, not to mention how it would impact state revenue or the 5,000 state store workers.” Deasy said that last year, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board returned $765 million to the state’s General Fund. “Where would the state get that money?” he asked. “That’s not a one-time contribution but is provided annually by a state-owned asset. That money would have to come from somewhere. There are too many questions still unanswered. Deasy announces $376,000 in grants for community pool and trailways

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 30 – State Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, announced today a total of $376,600 in state funding for upgrades to the Crafton Community Pool and recreational trails along Pittsburgh’s three rivers. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources awarded the following grants : $250,000 to Crafton Borough for the rehabilitation of Crafton Community Pool, including renovating the bathhouse and concession stand, installing utilities, ADA access, landscaping and other site improvements. $26,000 to Friends of the Riverfront Inc. to prepare a Water Trail Management Plan for the Three Rivers Water Trail in Allegheny County. $100,600 to Riverlife to prepare a trail study for the Three Rivers Heritage Trail on the West End Bridge. “These investments provide a boost to recreational areas where people can enjoy the outdoors and connect with their communities,” Deasy said. “The improvements to the Crafton Community Pool and preparing plans for land and water trails along the Three Rivers helps to encourage people to visit these areas and makes them more accessible for all.” The DCNR grant was made available through the Community Conservation Partnership Program. HARRISBURG, Dec. 6 – A $1 million state grant will fund renovations to create a community center and renovations that lay the groundwork for affordable housing at Pittsburgh’s Jasmine Nyree Campus, state Rep. Dan Deasy announced today. Deasy, D-Allegheny, said the projects – funded by the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program – will enhance quality of life for the students and families who benefit from the campus’ comprehensive special education services. “Securing this funding is exciting because it will support JNC’s mission of helping students and other residents with special needs grow and flourish,” Deasy said. “Some of the funding will be used to create a community center where those on campus can attend events, form friendships, sharpen social skills, and share quality time with family and educators. Deasy announces $1.4 million in state funding to extend road in McKees Rocks

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 19 – The borough of McKees Rocks was awarded $1.4 million in grant funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority for a project that would extend Intermodal Way to connect to West Carson Street, announced State Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny. Deasy said the CFA awarded funding for the project through its Multimodal Transportation Fund Program. The project would construct 870 linear feet of roadway to connect a section of the road to the dead end of Intermodal Way at the railroad bridge. Deasy said an eight-foot-wide trail running 3,200 linear feet is also slated to be constructed to run along Intermodal Way from Angelina Avenue to West Carson Street. “This grant will allow McKees Rocks to continue its project to divert truck traffic out of the downtown and improve access to the existing intermodal freight facilities from the south,” Deasy said. “This is an investment not just in our community, but in our regional economy, since improving access to intermodal facilities like this is a key part of the logistical supply chain.” CFA Multimodal Transportation Funds may be used for the development, rehabilitation, and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development. Deasy: Legislation to provide restaurants relief passes House

HARRISBURG, Oct. 27 – State Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, applauded the passage of legislation today that would provide relief measures to help the restaurant industry in its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Deasy, the Democratic chair of the House Liquor Control Committee, said the Senate amended H.B. 425 to include language from his proposed legislation to remove barriers to outdoor dining. The legislation also included initiatives authored by state Rep. Anita Kulik, D-Allegheny, to relax some requirements for safekeeping liquor licenses and by state Rep. Napoleon Nelson, D-Montgomery, expanding off-site catering permits. “Restaurants have been doing everything in their power to stay afloat as this pandemic persists,” Deasy said. “This bill would provide much-needed assistance to these business owners by giving them flexibility in countering some of the obstacles they’ve struggled with for nearly two years.” House Bill 425 has passed the House and the Senate and is currently awaiting the governor’s signature. Deasy: $500,000 in grants awarded to Allegheny County blight remediation projects

HARRISBURG, May 25 – The Commonwealth Financing Authority awarded a combined $500,000 to two blight remediation projects that would make way for affordable housing and future development, said state Rep. Dan Deasy. Deasy said $300,000 was awarded to McKees Rocks to purchase up to 10 properties that will be renovated and turned into affordable housing. Another $200,000 was awarded to Char-West Council of Governments to demolish 12 blighted properties, some of which will require asbestos abatement, throughout 10 Allegheny County municipalities , including some in Deasy’s legislative district . The project plans to restore each site for future development. “This funding is an investment in better, safer communities,” said Deasy, D-Allegheny. “Blighted properties in McKees Rocks will become affordable homes for families, while the Char-West Council of Governments project is getting rid of harmful asbestos lingering in some communities and creating space for new developments.” The CFA awarded a total of $12 million from its Blight Remediation Program for planning and remediation projects across the state. Deasy: Pa. should resolve outstanding unemployment issues before launching new UC system

PITTSBURGH, May 7 – To show his support of Pennsylvanians at the “Pay Benefits Now” rally in downtown Pittsburgh on Thursday, state Rep. Dan Deasy is calling on the state to resolve hundreds of thousands of unemployment claims before the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry launches a new Unemployment Compensation system on June 1. “I am extremely concerned that these cases are going to get lost in the transition,” said Deasy, D-Allegheny. “For those deemed eligible, they have waited far too long for benefits they have earned and desperately need. For those the department deems ineligible, let us move the process forward now and provide these claimants their right to an appeal.” Deasy shares the concerns of rally organizers who said nearly 300,000 Pennsylvanians continue to wait on decisions regarding their unemployment benefits. The groups said some of those claimants have been in limbo for months and have faced evictions, foreclosures, utility shut offs, and hunger. Deasy wrote a letter to Gov. CRAFTON, April 7 – State Rep. Dan Deasy announced today that the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County has awarded $200,000 in Community Infrastructure and Tourism grant funding to Crafton Borough. Deasy said the grant will be used in the construction of a new storage garage for the Public Works Department. “Crafton’s Public Works Department provides important maintenance, from street sweeping and plowing to general facility repairs, in order to keep the borough at its best,” said Deasy, D-Allegheny. “I want to congratulate Crafton on being awarded this grant that will help the department continue its mission to improve the borough.” CITF grants provide financial assistance to municipalities, councils of government, nonprofits and for-profit businesses to facilitate economic development projects in Allegheny County.
