Davis to introduce bill that would require insurers to subsidize wig costs for hair-loss patients

HARRISBURG, Oct. 6 – State Rep. Tina Davis, D-Bucks, today announced her intention to introduce legislation that would require insurers to provide at least $1,000 toward cranial prostheses or wigs.
For the millions of Americans experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions such as alopecia and lupus, or because of cancer treatment, the negative impacts can extend far beyond physical changes, Davis said. Hair loss can profoundly affect self-image and confidence, contribute to anxiety and depression, and make it more difficult for people to feel fully engaged in their everyday lives.
“Unfortunately, wigs made with human hair can cost over $3,000, making them difficult to afford for many people,” said Davis. “This is why I, along with Senator Steve Santasiero, will be introducing legislation that would require insurers to provide at least $1,000 toward cranial prostheses, or wigs.
“It is our hope that by making wigs more affordable, those struggling with hair loss will be able to find a wig that brings them confidence and makes day-to-day life more manageable,” she said.
Davis is currently circulating the proposal among her colleagues seeking support for the measure and intends to introduce the legislation soon.
