State awards funds for
Armstrong Middle School solar project
|
I'm excited to share some great news for our community. Senator Steve Santarsiero and I are proud to announce that the Bristol Township School District has been awarded a $400,000 state grant to support the Armstrong Middle School Solar Project.
This funding, awarded through the Solar for Schools Grant Program, will help lower energy costs and expand the use of renewable energy at Armstrong Middle School.
Launched in July 2024, the Solar for Schools Program was designed to ease the financial burden of installing solar energy systems in Pennsylvania’s schools. Funds can be used for equipment, installation, permit fees, energy storage, and utility connections.
Projects like the Armstrong Middle School Solar Project show how public schools can lead the way in clean energy innovation. This grant not only reduces energy costs, but also gives students a unique opportunity to learn about sustainability and environmental responsibility.
This investment reflects our shared commitment to building a cleaner, more fiscally responsible future for our schools and our communities.
As always, I’m here to support projects that benefit our students, our environment, and our taxpayers.

Fireworks Safety Tips for Memorial Day Weekend
|
With Memorial Day weekend approaching, the Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner is reminding everyone to celebrate safely. While fireworks are a beloved part of the holiday, they come with significant risks. To ensure a safe and enjoyable weekend, please keep the following safety tips in mind:
- Avoid alcohol and drugs: Never use fireworks after consuming alcohol, illegal drugs, or medications that impair judgment.
- Supervise children: Never allow young children to handle fireworks. Sparklers burn at 2,000°F and are a leading cause of injuries.
- Prepare for emergencies: Keep a bucket of water, hose, or fire extinguisher nearby when setting off fireworks.
- Wear protective gear: Safety glasses are essential to protect your eyes.
- Handle fireworks properly: Never hold fireworks in your hand or place any part of your body over them.
- Maintain a safe distance: Never light fireworks inside or near people, vehicles, or buildings.
- Dispose of fireworks safely: Soak spent and unused fireworks in water before discarding them.
- Keep pets safe: Keep pets indoors and provide background noise to reduce stress.
- Stay legal: Illegal fireworks should never be used.
The OSFC reminds everyone that fireworks laws in Pennsylvania are strict. Individuals over 18 can purchase consumer-grade fireworks, but there are clear regulations on their use:
- Fireworks cannot be used on private or public property without permission.
- They should not be directed at people, vehicles, or buildings.
- It is illegal to use fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Fireworks cannot be used within 150 feet of a building or vehicle.
Additionally, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources prohibits fireworks on public lands, including state parks and forests, due to the increased risk of wildfires.
Let’s keep our celebrations safe and fun for everyone.

Watt’s Up with Your Electric Bill?
Tips to Beat the Heat (and the Rates) This Summer
|
With new electric rates taking effect June 1, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is encouraging residents to act now to keep summer energy bills in check. Prices for default electric service are increasing across most utilities — some by over 10%.
If you don’t shop for electricity, you pay the default rate, which is going up in many areas. Even if you have a supplier contract, it’s smart to be aware of market trends. Here are a few ways to save:
Tips to lower your summer energy bill:
- Clean or service your HVAC system and use a programmable thermostat
- Seal drafty doors and windows to keep cool air inside
- Use ceiling fans and unplug devices not in use
- Do laundry and dishes during cooler, off-peak hours (avoid 6–8 p.m.)
- Switch to ENERGY STAR appliances and efficient lighting
Before you shop for a new electric supplier:
- Compare offers at www.PAPowerSwitch.com
- Check if the rate is fixed or variable and know the contract length
- Be aware of early termination fees or monthly service charges
Visit www.PAPowerSwitch.com for more energy-saving tips and tools to compare rates. A few small changes now can lead to real savings all summer long.
