HARRISBURG, April 24 – Pennsylvania lawmakers today adopted a resolution introduced by state Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz designating April 8, 2025, as Dominican Remembrance Day, addressing a tragedy that shook that nation and many residents within the Commonwealth.
On April 8, at a live performance by Rubby Pérez at the Jet Set Nightclub with between 500 to 1,000 people in attendance, the roof of the venue collapsed suddenly and catastrophically, resulting in 231 fatalities, more than 200 injuries, and 189 individuals rescued from the rubble, making it one of the deadliest non-natural disasters in all of Dominican Republic’s history.
“Our Commonwealth is home to a vibrant, proud Dominican community,” Cepeda-Freytiz said. “Over 81,000 Dominicans call Pennsylvania home. This resolution acts to honor their background, and to support their mourning right here at home. República Dominicana – estamos con ustedes.”
In that tragedy, 17 U.S. citizens were killed, and one citizen was injured. With more than 81,000 Dominicans currently residing in Pennsylvania, Cepeda-Freytiz said that the House of Representatives joins in mourning this international tragedy by designating April 8, 2025, as Dominican Remembrance Day in Pennsylvania in honor of the victims who perished in the tragedy.
