Fiesta de la Salud TOMORROW!

This is a reminder that TOMORROW, May 31, I will be hosting Fiesta de la Salud (Health Fair) at Lauer’s Park Elementary School at 251 N. 2nd Street, Reading from 10 AM – 2 PM. There will be free glucose meters, free food, free massages, and MORE! We look forward to seeing you there!!

Salvation Army Annual Civic Luncheon

Last week I attended the Salvation Army’s annual Civic Luncheon “Homeruns for Good,” where I joined community leaders to recognize outstanding service from Reading’s most dedicated volunteers. This year the Salvation Army honored The Reading Fire Department and Carol Ortwein for their dedication to our community.

Tec Centro Graduation Ceremony

I also had the pleasure of attending the Tec Centro Graduation Ceremony this past week. Congratulations to all of the graduates in the various programs for being a shining example of what it means to learn and grow!

Borough of Wyomissing Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony

My staff and youth council joined the Borough of Wyomissing this week to celebrate their Memorial Day parade and to attend their Remembrance Ceremony. The Borough honored Chris Kaag as Grand Marshal of the 2025 Parade – a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and community leader who embodies the values of service, sacrifice, and strength. This year’s Wyomissing Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony was a powerful tribute to the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation, and I am honored to have been a part of it.

Grand Opening at Mike and Joes Barber Salon

I joined co-owners Eric Rodriguez and Gilbert Nazario for the Grand Opening of their new location of Mike and Joes Barber Salon – located at 1235 Penn Ave, Suite 200, Wyomissing, 19610 from their previous location at 1206 Schuylkill Ave Reading, PA 19601. This shop has been open for over 50 years within our community and has been owned and operated by Eric Rodriguez for over 29 years.

Splash Pad Ribbon Cutting at Barbey Playground

The water-play feature at Barbey’s Playground has been out of order for several years. The reestablishment of this splash pad brings Reading’s total number of water playgrounds to seven. I am committed to bringing community spaces to life within my district, and it was my honor to join Mayor Eddie Moran at the Splash Pad’s Ribbon Cutting.

Paul Miller’s Law

Effective June 5, Paul Miller’s Law will make it illegal to use a handheld cell phone in Pennsylvania while operating a vehicle. By implementing this law, Pennsylvania joins other states in taking a stand against distracted driving, reinforcing the message that safety on the roads is paramount.

Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has made it easier for older friends and neighbors to stay in their homes while affording groceries, medicine, and so much more. Also, don’t forget that thanks to changes I helped to make in 2023, income eligibility and rebate amounts have increased significantly!

And now there's more time to apply! The deadline to apply for a rebate on one's rent or property taxes paid in 2024 has been extended to the end of the year. Please contact my office for more information or to apply.

Money Match

Keep an eye on your mailbox -- 40,000 Pennsylvanians are receiving letters this week as part of the PA Money Match program, which returns unclaimed property worth $500 or less automatically. Confirm your address, and you could receive a check in about 45 days! Visit patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property or contact my office for help searching for other unclaimed funds of yours that PA Treasury may be holding in safekeeping -- the average claim is worth over $1,000!

Every year, the Pennsylvania Treasury helps people claim unclaimed property that is rightfully theirs. Currently, the Treasury has nearly $3.8 billion in unclaimed property it is seeking to return to individuals and businesses.

PA 529

Pennsylvania offers a Qualified Tuition Program, which provides a tax-advantaged, flexible college and career savings plan. The Pennsylvania 529 plan is also exempt from Pennsylvania inheritance tax. PA ABLE

Pennsylvania offers a compatible tax-free savings program for people with disabilities and their families. It gives eligible individuals with qualified disabilities, and their families and friends, a tax-free way to save for disability-related expenses, while maintaining government benefits (with a limitation for SSI).
