Rep. Andre D. Carroll announces Youth Expo at Lonnie Young Recreation Center in response to community safety concerns

GERMANTOWN, May 30 – Following the tragic shooting incident outside the Lonnie Young Recreation Center on April 1, state Rep Andre D. Carroll is proud to announce the upcoming Youth Expo, a community-driven initiative aimed at providing safe spaces, employment opportunities and positive activities for youth in Germantown.

The Youth Expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Lonnie Young Recreation Center, 1100 E. Chelten Ave., Philadelphia. This event is a direct response to the concerns raised during the Emergency Townhall Meeting held on April 15 where community members expressed the urgent need for increased youth programming and employment opportunities as critical roles in combating violence and creating a safer environment for young people.

“Our community has spoken, and we are listening,” said Carroll, D-Phila. “The Youth Expo is not just an event; it is a commitment to our young people that we are dedicated to providing them with the tools, opportunities and support they need to thrive. Together, we can create a safer community for all.”

The Youth Expo will feature a variety of activities and resources, including:

  • Help with applying for working papers for those aged 14-17.
  • The opportunity for children of all ages to sign up for summer programs.
  • Jobs for teens and parents.
  • Mentorship and violence prevention information.

Carroll said the tragic events of April 1 emphasized the urgent need for safe spaces and positive outlets for youth in the community. The Youth Expo aims to address these needs by offering a platform for young people to learn about career pathways and participate in activities that promote community involvement.

He also noted that June 6-8 is Gun Violence Awareness Weekend. People are encouraged to wear orange in support of victims of gun violence. Carroll said his office will also be supporting this awareness endeavor.

“Together, we can empower our youth and build a stronger, safer community for all,” Carroll said.
