Hello neighbors!
This week, the House voted to adopt HR 86, my resolution to designate March 17, 2025, as "Bayard Rustin Day" in Pennsylvania.
Throughout history, many influential figures have shaped our nation, yet some remain overlooked despite their profound contributions. Bayard Rustin is one such individual—a man whose dedication to justice, equality, and nonviolence transformed the Civil Rights Movement and, ultimately, our society.
A close advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rustin played a pivotal role in making nonviolent resistance a foundational principle of the Civil Rights Movement. He was the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, one of the most significant demonstrations in our nation's history. Additionally, Rustin co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and participated in the Journey of Reconciliation, an early effort to challenge segregation in interstate travel. This action later served as a model for the Freedom Rides of 1961, further advancing civil rights in the United States.
Beyond his contributions to racial justice, Bayard Rustin was also a staunch advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, using his voice and platform to champion equality at a time when it was deeply unpopular to do so. As a gay, Black man, Rustin faced adversity on multiple fronts, yet he remained steadfast in his pursuit of justice for all people.
Our world today is a direct result of Rustin’s activism, and while his impact is undeniable, his name is too often forgotten in discussions of history. To ensure his legacy is properly honored, we are introducing a resolution to designate March 17, 2025, as "Bayard Rustin Day" in Pennsylvania. By recognizing this day, we reaffirm our commitment to the values of equality, justice, and nonviolence that Rustin so passionately upheld.
As always in service,
Rep. Andre D. Carroll

On March 17th, I had the chance to sit down with Asil Greer, the Kidpreneur and founder of I Can Read So I Can Lead!, whose mission is to empower children to read in order to lead. I was so happy to talk with him about all the wonderful plans he has coming up and to figure out ways I can help support his cause. Please check out all the great work your neighbor is doing across the United States and give some of his books a read!

On March 18th, my team had the pleasure of attending Girls High’s Annual S.A.F.E. Summit. This meaningful event brought together families and community partners to connect with essential resources that support safety, health, and economic stability. We’re truly grateful to have been part of such an impactful day, working alongside others to help bridge gaps and uplift our community. It’s inspiring to see schools like yours leading the way. Thank you for all that you do for our young people and their families.

I had the opportunity to testify on the importance of oversight and accountability within Philadelphia’s correctional facilities.
Speaking before the City Council Labor & Civil Service Committee, I was able to emphasize the critical role this committee plays and advocate for the meaningful change it can bring to our system.
Please, take some time to listen in on my Instagram @repadc

On March 20th, I had the opportunity to attend Red Metal Dust: An Evening with Sky Hopinka! The Barnes Foundation gave us our first look at Red Dust Metal, a new installation of photographic landscapes by Sky Hopinka. I was happy to listen to this Q&A, where I gained a new perspective on the themes, materials, and artistic approach of his work. Thank you, Barnes Foundation, for inviting me to a discussion I’ll never forget.

On March 21st, I had the honor of taking part in a memory circle held in dedication to David P. Richardson. It was truly uplifting to be surrounded by his friends, family, and community leaders, all sharing heartfelt stories and reflections about the impact he had on their lives. Listening to the many ways he touched his community and loved ones was both inspiring and humbling. I was especially grateful for the opportunity to share my own thoughts, serve in the seat he once held, and reflect on how his legacy continues to guide and live on through the work I do today! Thank you, Germantown InfoHub, for putting together such a meaningful community event.

If you have any questions about the seminar or want to schedule a senior fraud presentation at your event, church, or group meeting, please call (215) 849-6592! Thank you to everyone who came out, and to VSP, Holsey Temple Church, and Archwell Health for helping put on such a great event for the community!
