EBENSBURG, Jan. 29 – State Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria, is encouraging high school seniors to apply for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship. Each year, the program awards two students a four-year scholarship to help with the cost of tuition and fees of a college, university or career school in Pennsylvania. Burns said a resident of the 72 nd District was one of the first students awarded the scholarship. Brea Neri, who graduated from Windber Area High School, won in 2011. “I want to make sure students and their families are aware of this opportunity that could help them lessen the financial burden of continuing their education,” Burns said. “Private donors contribute to the scholarship, which means no taxpayer or public money is used to fund the program.” Burns said to be eligible for the scholarship, students must have a minimum 3.0-grade point average. Other factors taken into consideration for the award include a student’s commitment to community, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, and financial need. Applicants will also need to submit an essay on the topic of how the state’s government can adapt to ensure it will respond to the needs of students, in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak and current recession. The scholarship program is administered by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities. Students can find more information and apply online through Read more
