Burns seeks governor’s help to land Amazon data center

Wants Cambria to secure slice of company’s $20 billion PA investment

EBENSBURG, June 18 – Seeking to snag a share of Amazon’s planned $20 billion investment in artificial intelligence in Pennsylvania, state Rep. Frank Burns has invited Gov. Josh Shapiro and his team to Cambria County to explore landing one of the high-tech campuses.

Burns, D-Cambria, formally asked the governor to return to Cambria County as his guest, as a follow-up to Shapiro’s visit and tour last year that resulted in $2.5 million for a new Johnstown Public Safety Building and $2 million to expand broadband internet access, among many other state investments.

“As a state representative in Cambria County, including the city of Johnstown, I am eager to work with you and your team to add a Cambria County campus to this list as soon as possible,” Burns wrote, noting that data centers are already announced for Luzerne and Bucks counties. “I believe we can craft a competitive and attractive package to make that happen – including groundwork I’ve laid to secure Keystone Opportunity Zone acreage that offers tax incentives to help lure job-creating investments.

“I look forward to continuing discussions with you and partnering with our local officials to take full advantage of this opportunity to strategically position Cambria County for future growth.”

“Amazon is making the largest private sector investment in Pennsylvania history – and my goal is doing all that I can to position Cambria County to get a slice of that $20 billion pie.” – State Rep. Frank Burns.

Burns said that with Amazon committed to opening multiple high-tech cloud computing and artificial intelligence innovation campuses across Pennsylvania – creating at least 1,250 high-paying, high-tech jobs – he as an elected official would be remiss in not at least trying to put the area’s best foot forward to land one.

That effort, he added, includes soliciting attention and help from the governor, who by virtue of his position is and will be a major player in such large-scale economic development.

“Amazon is making the largest private sector investment in Pennsylvania history – and my goal is doing all that I can to position Cambria County to get a slice of that $20 billion pie,” Burns said.
