Briggs statement calling for Rep. Aaron Bernstine’s resignation

KING OF PRUSSIA, Oct. 1 – State Rep. Tim Briggs today called for the immediate resignation of state Rep. Aaron Bernstine following reports of Bernstine’s conduct Tuesday night at McGrath’s Pub in Harrisburg:

“I believe Rep. Bernstine should resign immediately, and I don’t take calls for resignation lightly. I wouldn’t make one now if I didn’t believe that his abhorrent behavior has once again crossed the line.

“According to PennLive, Bernstine directed a deeply offensive homophobic and racial slur at my friend and colleague Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and then made a false and cruel comment about Kenyatta having AIDS because of his weight loss. He reportedly made these comments about a fellow lawmaker who wasn’t even there to defend himself.

“That isn’t political disagreement. It isn’t partisan rhetoric. It is hateful and degrading behavior that has no place in public service.

“Public office carries a responsibility to show basic decency and respect for others. When that standard is so plainly violated, there must be accountability.

“This is not about party. It is about the standards we expect from those who serve in public office. Pennsylvania deserves elected officials who understand that political differences do not excuse personal attacks, hateful rhetoric or degrading another person.

“Rep. Bernstine should take responsibility for his reported conduct.”

Briggs represents the 149th Legislative District, which includes Bridgeport, West Conshohocken, Upper Merion and parts of Lower Merion in Montgomery County.
