LOOKING TO INCREASE JOBS IN PA
|
The PA House Democratic Policy Committee heard testimony on how to keep our region and the state of Pennsylvania competitive when it comes to job creation during our swing through Allegheny County.
Job creation is happening in and around Pittsburgh International Airport thanks to innovation, manufacturing and energy initiatives. The airport is a hub for more than just transportation. We heard testimony from Mainspring Energy, a California-based company bringing close to 1,000 jobs to the region when its $174 million linear generator plant is in place. This includes not only 300 building trades jobs to build the plant, but also 600+ permanent jobs when it's up and running adjacent to the airport. The Trump administration has yet to release the funding that was first approved through the Biden administration, which is holding up ground breaking – but the company is hopeful the funds will ultimately be released.
We need to keep PA competitive for high-impact projects, and the committee heard more from the Allegheny Conference on Community Development on what's working and how PA can improve.
Another potential job generator is data centers, which will be in Pennsylvania's future. Lawmakers are tasked with building a framework that works for us all. The committee hosted a roundtable to hear from workers and organized labor officials, energy providers, environmental advocates and the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau.
Workers and union leaders noted PA is in competition with other states for data centers and, consequently, job creation. Even though states are racing to build data centers, there's a need for us to do this right.

POLICY COMMITTEE TRAVELS TO PITTSBURGH
|
The House continues to examine ways we can help Pennsylvania and cities like Pittsburgh and Erie return as national leaders in delivering economic opportunities and development for our communities. A one-of-its-kind tax credit program created in 2016 has helped waterfront development. But demand for the program is greater than its availability, and developers are hopeful an expansion of the measure would help meet the rising demand across Pennsylvania.
Rep. Dan Goughnour and Rep. Emily Kinkead brought the committee to Riverlife's Shore Thing, a floating platform barge along the Allegheny River – located between the Roberto Clemente and Andy Warhol bridges. We heard from Duquesne Light Company's Angela Feldbauer and Riverlife CEO Matthew Galluzzo on this project and the estimated $1.5 million that has been invested on projects to improve the city all within eyesight of Shore Thing.
As a member of the House Majority Leadership team, I serve as Chairman of the House Majority Policy Committee. We travel the state, exploring issues and talking to members of the community, workers, advocates and experts on a variety of topics. We examine issues to see if there is a legislative solution to improving lives across the commonwealth. We have hosted 33 hearings across 25 ZIP codes in 9 counties so far this year, and we expect to host 100+ hearings this session – which is our typical workload.
Up next: The committee heads to southeast PA, including a stop in Bucks County Monday.

The House will return to session later this month. The House has scheduled session days in September, but we will also return to the chamber sooner if the Senate GOP can agree on multiple issues. You can see how the House votes here.

When private for-profit schools and their dark money backers came after Fairview and Millcreek School Districts to siphon off taxpayer dollars to make a profit off taxpayers. I stopped them. We need to protect our high-performing schools!
My team and I deliver for local people & projects. We cut the red tape in Harrisburg to secure the support our region needs.
- When our schools need funding ...
- When our police officers need a new vehicle to preserve lives ...
- When our firefighters need funds for life-saving equipment ...
We delivered to the tune of more than $92 million during the 2023-24 legislative session.
