Frankel announces $2 million in state grants for public safety and parks projects

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 18 – State Rep. Dan Frankel, D-Allegheny, announced today $2 million in state funding to support projects in the 23rd Legislative District.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority administered the grants from the Statewide Local Share Account, which is funded from the PA Race Horse Development Gaming Act, along with the Act 13 Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program, which supports projects involving the development, rehabilitation and improvement of public parks, recreation areas, greenways, trails and river conservation.

Frankel said grants awarded from the Statewide Local Share Account program include $500,000 to the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, on behalf of the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, for the Adult Center Project in Pittsburgh to expand the campus hosting the LAVI Program, which provides occupational, physical, assistive device and healthcare services.

Frankel also worked with state Reps. Aerion A. Abney, Emily Kinkead, Lindsay Powell, Dan Deasy, La’Tasha D. Mayes, Abigail Salisbury, Jessica Benham, and John Inglis, all D-Allegheny, to secure the following LSA funding:

  • $1 million for Pittsburgh to purchase two new ambulances. This funding will allow the city to retire two aging units that have cost thousands of dollars each month in repairs.
  • $300,000 for the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority to purchase 13 new vehicles to replace outdated units in its fleet.

Frankel added that $200,000 in funding from the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program was awarded to the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy to improve access and connectivity in Mellon Park.

“Whether it’s modernizing emergency services, updating infrastructure or expanding programs for people with disabilities, these projects are about making our communities safer, healthier, and more connected," Frankel said. "A more inclusive space benefits us all."

The CFA is an independent agency of the state Department of Community and Economic Development that administers Pennsylvania’s economic stimulus packages.
