Urges PUC to consider interests of consumers whose budgets are stretched

HARRISBURG, Nov. 19 – State Rep. Dan Goughnour, D-Allegheny, today announced his opposition to a proposed rate hike by Pennsylvania American Water, saying that family budgets are already stretched thin and that higher bills could cause further hardship for Mon Valley residents.
Pennsylvania American Water has asked the state Public Utility Commission for permission to raise rates to support $1.2 billion in ongoing water and wastewater service system investments.
If approved by the PUC, water bills would increase by approximately $14 per month, while wastewater bills would rise by about $10 per month. Customers with combined stormwater and wastewater systems could see an increase of roughly $20 per month.
“This isn’t the time for a rate increase like this,” Goughnour said. “I recognize that Pennsylvania American Water is consistently upgrading its infrastructure and systems, but I’m not in favor of shifting that burden to consumers. The PUC needs to keep the interests of consumers in mind, and I urge them to consider all possible alternatives before approving any proposed rate increase.”
Goughnour said he plans to contact the PUC to formally express his opposition, and he urged consumers to consider doing so, as well.
Consumers can write to the PUC at Secretary’s Bureau, Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, 400 North St., Harrisburg, PA, 17120.
