Mayes launches PA Black Maternal Health Caucus with Cephas, Curry

HARRISBURG, Oct. 18 – State Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes, D-Allegheny, on Tuesday launched the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus with state Reps. Morgan Cephas, D-Phila., and Gina H. Curry, D-Delaware.

The caucus seeks to address the alarming rates of Black maternal mortality and morbidity in Pennsylvania through legislation, such as the Pennsylvania MOMNIBUS, a legislative package that would invest in policy solutions to improve maternal health outcomes.

“By launching this caucus, we may begin to address severe maternal morbidity rates, which are highest for Black, non-Hispanic patients, and significantly reduce maternal mortality in Pennsylvania,” Mayes said.

She added, “Together, with our colleagues in the House and Senate, Black maternal health stakeholders, advocates, and Black mamas and birthing people, we will build upon Act 5 of 2023 and the 2023-24 state budget’s $2.3 million investment in Black maternal health by passing the Pennsylvania MOMNIBUS to address this public health crisis and improve access to reproductive health care for all Pennsylvanians.”

Cephas, Curry and Mayes serve as co-chairs of the caucus.
