PHILADELPHIA, July 15 – State Rep. Morgan Cephas, D-Phila., has partnered with Uber, ACHIEVEability, and state and local legislators to offer free rides for West and Southwest Philadelphia families affected by the July 11 microburst storms, many of whom experienced damage to their vehicles.
Cephas said this partnership will ease transportation access for these families, offering support to help them get to temporary housing options, to and from work, and to reach essential services. The program begins today and runs through July 29.
Families interested in transportation vouchers should contact Philadelphia Delegation Chair Cephas’ office or their area legislator to learn more about eligibility and be referred to ACHIEVEability. Participating offices include Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton, Rep. Regina Young, Rep. Rick Krajewski, City Council Majority Leader Katherine Gilmore Richardson, City Council Majority Whip Isaiah Thomas, and City Council Members Jamie Gauthier (3rd Council District) and Curtis Jones Jr. (4th Council District).
“When severe weather strikes, recovery doesn’t end when the storm passes,” said Cephas. “Many families and communities are still working to adjust while dealing with damage and disruption. I’m grateful to partner with Uber, ACHIEVEability and my colleagues in the Philadelphia Delegation and City Council to help ensure our neighbors are connected to the resources that can help them to recover and rebuild.”
“As families recover from last weekend’s severe weather, they shouldn’t have to worry about how they’ll get to work or make it to a doctor’s appointment,” McClinton said. “I’m grateful for this partnership among Uber, Achievability and local leaders to help connect our neighbors with safe, reliable transportation so they can get back to their daily routines and focus on recovery.”
"Uber rides can be a lifeline for so many Philadelphians who are still dealing with the impacts of these storms. The scope of the damage is so large and widespread that this will likely be a prolonged recovery, so connecting neighbors with these services is one way that we can help families manage their mobility without disrupting their lives too much". said State Rep. Regina Young.
“The impact of last weekend’s extreme weather has been truly devastating for so many Philadelphians, including many residents in my neighborhood, Wynnefield. As those affected continue to rebuild, this generous donation from Uber will help Philadelphians who lost access to reliable transportation as a result of the storm. When you are navigating a crisis such as this, every burden that can be lifted makes a meaningful difference, so thank you to Uber for making the load a little lighter for our communities,” said Gilmore Richardson.
“The storm that impacted Philadelphia this past weekend brought unexpected challenges and expenses for many residents. I'm thankful to Uber and ACHIEVEability for their partnership and commitment to help ease the transportation burden as our communities recover. I’m hoping to see similar community efforts and partnerships from other key stakeholders in the future,” Thomas said.
“We appreciate Uber setting an example as a good corporate neighbor, particularly for our senior citizens who often rely on the service to get to doctor’s appointments and shopping,” Jones said.
"I'm grateful Uber and ACHIEVEability teamed up to help West and Southwest Philadelphians recover from last weekend's storm. So many families lost their vehicles to downed trees or flooding, and suddenly getting to work, school or the doctor felt impossible. Thanks to this partnership, that's one less thing they have to worry about as they pick up the pieces,” Gauthier said.
“At ACHIEVEability, we believe every family deserves the opportunity to thrive. We're grateful to Uber and our public partners for ensuring transportation remains a bridge to recovery—not another barrier—for families impacted by the storm,” said Jamila Harris-Morrison, executive director of ACHIEVEability.
"In the days following a disaster, access to reliable transportation can help families begin to recover. We're proud to partner with ACHIEVEability and state and local officials to help ensure transportation isn't another barrier for families impacted by the recent storms as they recover and rebuild,” said Jazmin Kay, Uber’s public affairs Lead for Pennsylvania.
This continues Cephas’ partnership with Uber and ACHIEVEability, which began last year to provide ride support for hundreds of seniors in West and Southwest Philadelphia to ensure they can access transportation to medical appointments, pharmacies and grocery stores.
