Ensuring Accountability in School Funding
|
This week, I voted to increase transparency and accountability for your tax dollars that are used for scholarships that help eligible students pay private school tuition. This is a valuable state program that allots $680 million to provide educational opportunities for students from low-income families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it. Organizations make contributions to the program and receive a tax credit in return, however, the state knows nearly nothing about who is benefiting from this money. This is about basic information like what school the recipient attends, what district they reside in, household income, etc.
You may have heard or read some misinformation about how this bill would impact our students and that funding was cut to the program. Some parents and some private and parochial schools had concerns with how a previous version of this bill allocated funding – the legislature listened and made sure that funding stayed put. Not a single dime of that $680 million for scholarships has been cut or shifted.
We also expanded eligibility for scholarships and to kids for Pre-K, so we’re helping more families afford quality education for their kids at all ages.
The bill still needs to be considered by the state Senate, where there will likely be changes made, so stay tuned for news on that progress and please reach out to my office for more information about the program and how I’m working to make sure your tax dollars are accountable while improving educational opportunities for our students.

Supporting Childcare Providers
|
As our work on the state budget continues, I love meeting with neighbors who come to the state Capitol in Harrisburg to advocate for our communities! Laverne Cheeseboro visited this week from Heavenly Made Creations, which is a childcare center in our area, to advocate for more funding and support for childcare in the state budget. Affordable childcare is so important to our working families and the growth of our children!

Keep an eye out for Team 185 as my staff and I will be knocking on doors in our communities all summer long to make sure that you know about the information and resources that we can provide. It’s also a good chance to interact with our neighbors so you can let us know what changes and improvements are needed in your neighborhood!
Check out the graphic above for the starting location, date, and time for when we’ll be near your community!

Team 185 Takes on Harrisburg!
|
This week, I was happy to welcome my district staff to the Capitol in Harrisburg. A special welcome to our two interns, Asante Johnson and Byshir Randall, who made the trip to visit our beautiful Capitol and learn more about my job as a legislator and the legislative process. Asante Johnson is currently attending Morehouse College, majoring in Computer Science, and Byshir Randall is currently attending Lincoln University, majoring in Criminal Justice. They’re a welcome addition to our Team185 for this summer!

Does the State Owe You Money?
|
Are you one of the nearly 30,000 people in our area who has Unclaimed Property in the PA Treasury Vault? It could be anything from lost paychecks, to jewelry, to forgotten savings bonds, or so much more. Our office is reaching out to our neighbors who have something valuable in the vault, but you can search your name on their website by clicking above to find out on your own and make your claim faster!

Property Tax/Rent Rebate Deadline Extended
|
The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is now open for taxes or rent that you paid in 2025. This program provides a rebate ranging from $380 to $1,000 to eligible older adults and people with disabilities while meeting certain household income requirements. In Philadelphia, supplemental rebates provide an additional $190 to $500 in relief to applicants with the most need.
These rebates have made it easier for older and disabled folks to stay in their homes while affording groceries, medicine, and so much more.
The deadline has been extended to December 31, but there’s no reason to wait!
Apply online today or contact one of my offices to find out if you qualify and let us help you apply!

My office helps city officials and local organizations connect to state grants available to help them do their important work to improve our communities and the lives of residents. You can find a list of state grant programs that are currently open for application on my website. We update this list as new programs come online so check back often.
