Does AI Have a Place in Education?

Video

As a member of the House Education Committee, I attended a series of informational hearings in Pittsburgh this week about the place of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning. We had a great discussion, and I gained valuable insight into regulating screen time for students, helping kids prepare for higher education, and the need for successful strategies for using AI in the classroom while avoiding the negatives of it being used as “a cheating tool.” Click above to watch a wrap up of both meetings!

Equitable, quality education for all students is priority for me as legislator and as a parent. I encourage you to watch both hearings below and learn more about this growing industry, its positive and negative potential with young minds, and how we can work together to ensure that education remains innovative but safe for students.

Online Grooming & Youth Safety

Video

I was humbled to speak at meeting of Philadelphia City Council’s Health & Human Services and Children & Youth committees about our collaborative work to raise awareness about online grooming, the safety of our youth, and how government can better protect kids and families through policy changes. I’m proud to support Councilmember Nina Ahmad’s recently introduced Resolution No. 260150 to examine the role of social and gaming platforms in the online grooming of youth. Councilmember Ahmad and I have been working together at our respective levels of government to end human trafficking and sexual exploitation – the work continues, but I’m happy with the progress that our partnership has produced.

You can click above to watch my comments from the meeting.

LIHEAP Extended until May 8

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application period for 2025–26 has been extended until May 8! Whether you rent or own your home, you could receive a cash grant from $200 to $1,000 based on your household size, income, and fuel type. You can find out more about eligibility requirements and documents you’ll need to apply by clicking the graphic above. Most importantly, this is a grant and does not have to be repaid.

To find out if you qualify and for help applying, contact my office to make an appointment with my knowledgeable staff, who can also find out if you qualify for any other state and local programs. You can also apply for LIHEAP online.

If you’re concerned about paying your electric bill, contact PECO now to ask about their assistance programs or payment plan options before it’s too late. Weatherize your home by sealing drafts and replacing your furnace filter, and explore other energy-saving tools. Acting early is important—#CallUtilitiesNow to explore options that can help keep your service connected.

So happy to welcome ArchWell Health to South Philly this week!

One of my favorite things to do is walk our commercial corridors to talk to local business owners and make sure that they know about the state resources that are available through my office for small businesses and find out what they need to thrive in our community. Support our local businesses – they’re the backbone of our communities!

Providing further support for local business owners, I was proud to co-host a Small Business Seminar with Speaker Joanna McClinton this week in Darby. This was a great opportunity for my office to connect with owners, owners to connect with one another, and present information that can benefit our commercial corridors!
