New Work Requirements for Some SNAP Recipients

If you benefit from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) there are new work requirements to continue receiving those benefits. Under the new federal guidelines, certain recipients will need to report that they are working, volunteering, or participating in an education or training program for at least 20 hours a week (or 80 hours each month). The requirements will continue to expand throughout the fall of 2025. You should have received a letter from the PA Dept. of Human Services like the one in the graphic above if you are effected, however you can learn more on the DHS website.

Keeping Up with the SEPTA Crisis

The SEPTA crisis is frustrating and unfortunate, but I’m working to keep you informed about the changes that affect our communities. The situation changes by the day, sometimes multiple times a day! Most recently, a court has ordered SEPTA to reverse the service cuts already made, though they will be able to proceed with their proposed fare increase.

SEPTA announced this afternoon that all services will be restored on Sept. 14 but with a 21.5% fare increase in accordance with the court ruling.

We continue fighting for a real, sustainable funding plan that will keep transit moving safely and prevent us from having to revisit this struggle in the future.

Mass transit is more than just getting fans to the game or to the airport—it’s a lifeline and a vital connection for so many Pennsylvanians across our commonwealth.

Follow my social media channels and local news to stay updated as this crisis evolves.

Music in the Park was a Blast!

Last week, we had an amazing time bringing the community together at our Music in the Park event in Elmwood Park! Thank you to all the community partners and organizations that came out to share resources. And thank you for helping us keep this beautiful park clean and safe!

My Human Trafficking Bill Gaining Momentum

Video

Thank you to PCN – the Pennsylvania Cable Network - for taking the time to talk with me about my legislation to raise awareness of human trafficking in PA. My bill would create training for lodging employees to recognize the red flags for this evil practice in their building and online. This has been a priority of mine for years and I'm happy to see it picking up momentum in the legislature! Click above to watch the brief interview and stay tuned for more to come on this movement!

Seniors Ride FREE on SEPTA

Did you know that seniors ride for free on SEPTA? A SEPTA Senior Fare Card allows seniors 65 and older to ride for free, but those cards do expire after three years. My office can help you get or renew your card. As we continue to work on a State Budget solution for mass transit, senior fare cards still allow you to ride for free to your medical appointments, your job, visiting family and friends, or anything you need to do in our region.

SEPTA keeps our communities moving and economy thriving – and a senior fare card helps your wallet by saving on transportation costs! Contact my office today for more information on getting or renewing your SEPTA Senior Fare Card.

Confronting the Chaos

The actions that are happening right now with the federal government in Washington, D.C. have been very overwhelming with what seems like daily attacks on our neighbors, our freedoms and basic rights. Just remember that there are always people to help. If you are concerned about the actions being taken on immigration, I encourage you to contact these local organizations listed in this document below. Additionally, while my office is here to assist you with state and local services, your concerns on these federal actions need to be heard by your federal officials. Check out the list of our federal representatives and senators and contact their offices for assistance or to let them know about your concerns. We’ve seen recently how advocacy and loud objections can lead to a course reversal or reevaluation by the president and his administration.

Don’t give up and don’t give in.
Know your rights and stay vigilant for your family and your community.

IN THE COMMUNITY

This year’s Southwest Philly Night Market was an incredible event! Thanks to Richard Allen Prep for hosting us and to Empowered CDC for partnering on this amazing community outreach event. Take time to listen to this discussion on WURD radio with me and Xeyah Martin from Empowered CDC about the great things we’re doing together!

It was an honor to join the Betty Parks Nourish to Flourish summer program and present a citation.
