Promoting Urban Ag in Southwest Philly
|
I was proud to host Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Labor & Industry Secretary Nancy A. Walker on Thursday to Sankofa Farm at Bartram’s Garden as part of their Urban Agriculture Tour. We had a great discussion about the career training programs available to our youth and young adults at Bartram’s Garden. As the mom of a young adult who has greatly benefited from this program, I can attest to how amazing of an opportunity this can be. Southwest Philadelphia is not the first place most people think of when they think “farming,” but the skills and experience that young folks can get at Sankofa Farms can be transformative for their future and the future of our neighborhoods.

Getting to the Green Light…
|
The State Budget is much more than a single document. It’s several parts that address the many funding needs in PA, including schools, healthcare, and public transportation. SEPTA funding is waiting for the Green Light from the PA Senate to move forward our work on the PA Budget. We’ve passed initial legislation in the PA House as a starting point on many of these pieces. We’re now focused on finding agreement on all elements of the budget that will benefit all of PA before inaction affects your day-to-day activity and wallet.

Fighting for Workers, Fighting for Our Future
|
We need more good jobs with better wages and real benefits you can raise a family on in Philly and Delco. I’m proud to let you know about how I’m fighting for you and our communities.
I fought to give more than 1 million working people a raise – making sure employees can afford to be customers, businesses can save money by keeping workers on the job and growing our economy.
You shouldn’t have to work until you die, and with Social Security under attack by federal lawmakers I fought to pass a bill that would give you the power to control your future. Keystone Saves lets you make your own choices while still enjoying the power of bulk purchasing to maximize your investments and protect your future.
Americans built the strongest economy and Middle Class on earth thanks to union labor and workers standing together. I’m working to make sure workers’ rights are not just law, they’re part of our constitution.
The House approved my bill that would crack down hard on employers who violate the Child Labor Act – because our kids deserve a chance to be kids and not be exploited by companies breaking the rules.
Public workers deserve the same workplace protections as private workers. I delivered to make sure federal OSHA safety regulations apply to every worker.
Worker misclassification costs you money and gives a free pass to some employers to cheat while punishing the employers who play by the rules. I voted to crack down on the bad guys and protect workers.
It’s a lot, but when it comes to protecting our hardworking neighbors in South * Southwest Philly and Delco, I will never stop fighting.

This week, I was honored to wield the gavel in the #PAHouse as speaker pro tempore. I was humbled to be chosen by Speaker McClinton to lead proceedings while she led the chamber with our opening prayer. Thanks to all my colleagues for the encouragement and excitement! The actions that are happening right now with the federal government in Washington, D.C. have been very overwhelming with what seems like daily attacks on our neighbors, our freedoms and basic rights. Just remember that there are always people to help. If you are concerned about the actions being taken on immigration, I encourage you to contact these local organizations listed in this document below. Additionally, while my office is here to assist you with state and local services, your concerns on these federal actions need to be heard by your federal officials. Check out the list of our federal representatives and senators and contact their offices for assistance or to let them know about your concerns. We’ve seen recently how advocacy and loud objections can lead to a course reversal or reevaluation by the president and his administration.
Don’t give up and don’t give in.
Know your rights and stay vigilant for your family and your community.

These rebates have made it easier for older and disabled folks to stay in their homes while affording groceries, medicine, and so much more.
