Navy Yard on the Rise

Video

Just a few weeks ago we were at the Navy Yard with Gov. Josh Shapiro talking about a $30 million investment in the Greenway District through the SITES program, and we’re back again to talk about more improvements! I was honored to present a check for $231,000 to PIDC to improve safety for workers, tourists, and visitors who walk, ride, and drive along South Broad Street at the Navy Yard. As that area continues to grow and develop, we need to respond with updated services to protect our people! This means better signals and signage, improved bike lanes, and more to ensure the safety and security of everyone coming through this growing area for business, tourism, and residential living in South Philadelphia.

South Philly is on the rise and it’s happening at the Navy Yard!

Investing in Those Who Protect Us

Video

This week, I stood with Chief William Righter of the Tinicum Township Police Department and other leaders to present a check for $128,000 for purchase of a new vehicle and construction of a new evidence unit. Officers put their lives on the line every day to protect our neighbors and serve this community in so many ways. I’m proud to be able to support their efforts. Prioritizing modern on-site technology will help with the efficiency of processing data and evidence from crime scenes to provide swifter justice for victims and resolution on wrongdoing. #TeamworkMakesTheDreamWork and I’m proud to team up with DCED, our leaders in Tinicum Township and our brave officers of the police department to make these targeted investments for our public safety.

Fund SEPTA Now!

We are not slowing down or quitting this effort until we get the mass transit funding that we need to keep SEPTA moving!

This week, PA House and Senate Democrats held a massive rally outside of SEPTA Headquarters in Center City ahead of their public hearings on their draconian service cuts and fare increases, to call on House and Senate Republicans to understand how investments in a fully functioning SEPTA would benefit the regional and state economy, and the entire commonwealth by extension.

In the House, we have legislation that follows Gov. Josh Shapiro’s recommendations from his budget proposal, and we have passed funding plans THREE TIMES in the previous session only to have the Senate GOP ignore them and offer no substantial plan of their own.

It’s time for Republican leadership to get serious about public transportation for all Pennsylvanians.

Better Understanding Challenges in Women's Health

In this Women’s Health Month, I encourage you to find out about the array of preventive health services that are available to you at no cost through your health insurance – preventive services like regular check-ups and annual or periodic screenings, pregnancy care, and other essential health services.

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Human Services (DHS), and Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) have launched a new survey this week to identify challenges and questions women have about their health insurance.

Click the graphic above to access the survey. It will be open until July 7 and is available online in English, Spanish and Chinese. Your input will be used to inform the administration and the legislature of the barriers Pennsylvanians face with health care and how we can work together to improve maternal health initiatives and women’s health care.

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department urges Pennsylvanians who have insurance questions, or who wish to file a complaint, to visit pa.gov/consumer or 1-866-PA-COMPLAINT.

Confronting the Chaos

During our first Women in Government event, we talked a lot about the actions that are happening right now with the federal government in Washington, D.C. It has been very overwhelming with what seems like daily attacks on our neighbors, our freedoms and basic rights. Just remember that there are always people to help. If you are concerned about the actions being taken on immigration, I encourage you to contact these local organizations listed in this document. Additionally, while my office is here to assist you with state and local services, your concerns on these federal actions need to be heard by your federal officials. Check out the list of our congressional and senatorial officials and contact their offices for assistance or to let them know about your concerns. We’ve seen recently how advocacy and loud objections can lead to a course reversal or reevaluation by the president and his administration.

Don’t give up and don’t give in.

Know your rights and stay vigilant for your family and your community.

IN THE COMMUNITY

This week we had an impactful community meeting in South Philly with Mayor Cherelle Parker, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel and West Broad Street Civic Association. I’m glad so many neighbors took the time to come out and be involved in our community.

Great to see so many people taking advantage of the Skilled Trades & Allied Health Workforce Development Series. My office was present to guide and provide information on state resources.

One of my favorite and most meaningful monthly meetings is with our local faith-based organizations. This week we had a wonderful talk in Southwest Philly.

What a great time at the Penrose School Peace March on Thursday afternoon!

A community meeting at Richard Allen Prep gave residents the opportunity to hear from Appliance 51 and their representatives about the toxic chemicals that were discovered adjacent to Bartram’s Garden last summer.

PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Extended Deadline for Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program – More Time to Apply!

Video

The application deadline for Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has been extended to Dec. 31, 2025.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has made it easier for older friends and neighbors to stay in their homes and afford groceries, medicine, and so much more.

The application period for the 2025 program is now open to get a rebate on your 2024 taxes or rent paid. Thanks to changes PA House Democrats fought for, more people are eligible, and the rebates are bigger than ever!

Give us a call, send an email, or stop by one of my offices to find out if you’re eligible. We can even help you apply.

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has released a multilingual tip sheet for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program to help more eligible residents access the benefit. Now available in seven languages—English, Spanish, Arabic, Simplified & Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese—the tip sheet is part of Pennsylvania’s initiative to expand access to state resources.

The PTRR Program, recently expanded for the first time in nearly 20 years, has already provided over $319 million in rebates for 2024, helping over 522,000 Pennsylvanians, including 106,000 first-time applicants. It supports seniors (65+), widows/widowers (50+), and people with disabilities (18+) based on income and rent/property tax paid.

Applicants can file online through myPATH in English or Spanish, with no account needed. Additional support for the PTRR program is also offered at PA Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers, and my district offices.

Additional Spanish-language resources include a translated instruction book and a step-by-step video guide. For more info, visit revenue.pa.gov/PTRR.

State Grants Available

My office helps city officials and local organizations connect to state grants available to help them do their important work to improve our communities and the lives of residents. You can find a list of state grant programs that are currently open for application on my website. We update this list as new programs come online so check back often.
