Dear Neighbor,

I’d like to share with you the work that I’m doing in Harrisburg and locally to ensure we Thrive in the 185. Keep reading for more details, follow my social media for updates, and please contact one of my offices to find out how we can help you with state and local programs and resources. #InformationIsPower

My offices will be closed on Tuesday, May 20, for Pennsylvania’s primary Election Day. Please exercise your constitutional right to vote in these local and judicial races that directly affect your day-to-day life! For Philadelphia voters, you can find out more about the offices that are on this ballot by checking out the voter guide from the Committee of Seventy, including three ballot questions that would change Philadelphia’s city charter that ALL registered voters are able to vote on regardless of party affiliation. All your voting resources can be found at PhiladelphiaVotes.com. If you’re in Delaware County, you can get all your election information at delcopa.gov/vote/.

Make your plan for Tuesday now and get out to VOTE!

Election Reform Now

House Democrats voted this week to make it easier for voters to exercise their right to vote and improve the elections process by passing the Voting Rights Protection Act, which makes numerous reforms, including providing options for early voting, increasing access to ballot drop boxes and allowing voters to correct minor errors on a mail-in ballot, as well as allowing election officials to prepare mail-in ballots ahead of Election Day, also known as pre-canvassing. These are commonsense reforms to make voting easier and more accessible for all Pennsylvania voters.

Support for HBCU & Higher Education

I was proud to host a Policy Hearing this week in conjunction with the House Democratic Policy Committee and the PA Legislative Black Caucus focused on how to better support Pennsylvania’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We have two amazing HBCU’s right here in our region, but they have faced years of underfunding that dramatically affect the level of education these institutions can provide. These are strong schools that offer students not just an education, but a community and environment that builds leaders, so we need to work hard to deliver equitable and accessible funding for these institutions. #EducationIsPower and our testifiers brought attention to the impact that these schools have on their students and the surrounding communities. This hearing was part of the PLBC’s annual K. Leroy Irvis Day of Action in Harrisburg focused on advocacy and moving Black Pennsylvanians forward.

As a former educator, I understand the energy and the commitment needed from teachers. I’m sending out sincere wishes for a Happy Teachers Appreciation Month to all educators in the 185th Legislative District and all across Pennsylvania!

Civics101

One my favorite parts of being a state Representative is educating my neighbors on civics and the importance of state and local government in your life. Check out my Civics101 series on my YouTube playlist and get educated on how your government works for YOU!

Confronting the Chaos

During our first Women in Government event, we talked a lot about the actions that are happening right now with the federal government in Washington, D.C. It has been very overwhelming with what seems like daily attacks on our neighbors, our freedoms and basic rights. Just remember that there are always people to help. If you are concerned about the actions being taken on immigration, I encourage you to contact these local organizations listed in this document. Additionally, while my office is here to assist you with state and local services, your concerns on these federal actions need to be heard by your federal officials. Check out the list of our congressional and senatorial officials and contact their offices for assistance or to let them know about your concerns. We’ve seen recently how advocacy and loud objections can lead to a course reversal or reevaluation by the president and his administration.

Don’t give up and don’t give in.

Know your rights and stay vigilant for your family and your community.

IN THE COMMUNITY

I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day last weekend, celebrating the mothers and mother-figures in your life. I enjoyed celebrating with my family, and with City Council President Kenyatta Johnson at the YESHA Grand Ballroom in South Philly.

My Chief of Staff Belinda Mills attended the Shen Yun Performing Arts performance at the Miller Theatre and presented the performing arts company with a House Citation ahead of its Philadelphia run.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the 12th Police District monthly town hall meeting. #InformationIsPower and attending community events are a great way to keep everyone informed.

It was an honor to meet Haitian Princess Dalhendji Henly at the state Capitol earlier this week and exchange ideas for the future of our respective communities!

What a great meeting with the PA School/Work coalition this week in my Capitol office while the House was in session.

Chris and Luke from my staff were walking the neighborhood this week in Tinicum Township knocking on doors to speak with our neighbors and drop off information about the services and resources that our office can provide.

PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Extended Deadline for Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program – More Time to Apply!

Video

The application deadline for Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has been extended to Dec. 31, 2025.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has made it easier for older friends and neighbors to stay in their homes and afford groceries, medicine, and so much more.

The application period for the 2025 program is now open to get a rebate on your 2024 taxes or rent paid. Thanks to changes PA House Democrats fought for, more people are eligible, and the rebates are bigger than ever!

Give us a call, send an email, or stop by one of my offices to find out if you’re eligible. We can even help you apply.

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has released a multilingual tip sheet for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program to help more eligible residents access the benefit. Now available in seven languages—English, Spanish, Arabic, Simplified & Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese—the tip sheet is part of Pennsylvania’s initiative to expand access to state resources.

The PTRR Program, recently expanded for the first time in nearly 20 years, has already provided over $319 million in rebates for 2024, helping over 522,000 Pennsylvanians, including 106,000 first-time applicants. It supports seniors (65+), widows/widowers (50+), and people with disabilities (18+) based on income and rent/property tax paid.

Applicants can file online through myPATH in English or Spanish, with no account needed. Additional support for the PTRR program is also offered at PA Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers, and my district offices.

Additional Spanish-language resources include a translated instruction book and a step-by-step video guide. For more info, visit revenue.pa.gov/PTRR.

State Grants Available

My office helps city officials and local organizations connect to state grants available to help them do their important work to improve our communities and the lives of residents. You can find a list of state grant programs that are currently open for application on my website. We update this list as new programs come online so check back often.

My offices are here to help!
