Prioritizing Your Mental Health

Video

My offices were closed last Thursday as my staff and I took part in grief counseling and training in the wake of recently losing our valued team member Dominic Gunter III. It’s been hard for all of us tragically losing someone close to our hearts, but normalizing mental health is a priority. It’s not easy to admit that you need help, and sometimes harder to find it when you do have that realization. I encourage you to reach out to my office or to a trusted source for help in locating resources because I know how much it helped me and my staff to work through our feelings and prioritize our individual mental health for ourselves and our families.

Energy Efficiency Bill Passes House

Video

I’m proud that my bill to streamline energy efficiency plan approvals passed in the House this week! This addresses situations where contractors are being denied or put through long delays because of their inclusion of mechanical insulation as a cost-efficiency measure. This would clarify that mechanical insulation is appropriate material that prevents workers from burns, reduces noise pollution, and improves energy efficiency by reducing energy consumption. Mechanical insulation is safe and standard and shouldn’t be the reason for delays or denials. This legislation passed in the House last year, too, so I’m hopeful that the Senate will take up this issue soon and get this to Governor Shapiro’s desk! Click the graphic below to read more!

Inspiring: Black Maternal Health Week Summit

Video

I had an amazing experience in downtown Pittsburgh at the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus Black Maternal Health Week conference, Black Maternal Health on the Rise!

#EducationIsPower and I had a great learning experience while bringing my own experience as a mother to the table and learning about the disturbing trends of health care and maternal mortality with Black mothers in Pennsylvania. Together we can do so much more!

Continuing the Conversation about Representation

I hope you were able to join my latest virtual discussion on Women in Government with powerhouse guests, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon and Philadelphia City Council Majority Leader Katherine Gilmore Richardson!

Click above to watch the discussion! You can also watch on my Facebook page or my website.

I’m proud to represent a legislative district where over 53% of the people are women. Your government should reflect who you are, so in 2025, I’m celebrating and highlighting the women who represent our communities at all levels of government with a monthly series of meetings and events that you should plan to attend to learn more about these amazing women, their achievements, the importance of representation, and how their work impacts our families and neighborhoods.

Watch my social media and subscribe to this email to be alerted for our next discussion!

Civics101

Video

One my favorite parts of being a state Representative is educating my neighbors on civics and the importance of state and local government in your life. Check out the first episode of my Civics101 series of short videos explaining the three branches of government.

Stay tuned for more episodes to get educated on how government affects you in your daily life!

Free Shredding Event

Shredding your old paperwork and documents that you no longer need is the best way to protect your identity and take care of that spring cleaning! Bring up to two bags of papers like old credit card and utility bills, bank statements, tax documents, anything with your personal information, to be shredded on-site and disposed of for FREE.

We’ll be in the parking lot at South Philadelphia High School at Snyder and Broad on Saturday, May 10 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. I hope to see you there!

Do You Need a REAL ID? YES!

As of May 7, you’ll need a REAL ID, valid U.S. Passport or Military ID to board a domestic airline flight or visit a federal government building. While it’s important to get your REAL ID, you only need to get one now if you have a flight scheduled in May or need to enter a federal building that requires one - but be sure to get yours soon! Click above to watch my brief discussion with Shane from the Philadelphia International Airport about the importance of getting your REAL ID!

PennDOT is hosting REAL ID Days at certain driver’s license centers where they can process and issue your REAL ID at the time of service. These are days in which those centers are normally scheduled closed. You can visit the South 70th Street Driver License Center at 2904 South 70th Street, Unit 8, in Southwest Philly on Monday, April 14 & 28, as well as May 5 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. to get your REAL ID with same day service. The Whitman Plaza Driver License Center at 330 West Oregon Avenue, Ste 240, in South Philly can also process your REAL ID on those days, however not with same day service.

Resources available in seven languages to assist Pennsylvanians applying for Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has released a multilingual tip sheet for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program to help more eligible residents access the benefit. Now available in seven languages—English, Spanish, Arabic, Simplified & Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese—the tip sheet is part of Pennsylvania’s initiative to expand access to state resources.

The PTRR Program, recently expanded for the first time in nearly 20 years, has already provided over $319 million in rebates for 2024, helping over 522,000 Pennsylvanians, including 106,000 first-time applicants. It supports seniors (65+), widows/widowers (50+), and people with disabilities (18+) based on income and rent/property tax paid.

Applicants can file online through myPATH in English or Spanish, with no account needed. Additional support for the PTRR program is also offered at Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers, and my district office.

Additional Spanish-language resources include a translated instruction book and a step-by-step video guide. For more info, visit revenue.pa.gov/PTRR.

Confronting the Chaos

During our first Women in Government event, we talked a lot about the actions that are happening right now with the federal government in Washington, D.C. It has been very overwhelming with what seems like daily attacks on our neighbors, our freedoms and basic rights. Just remember that there are always people to help. If you are concerned about the actions being taken on immigration, I encourage you to contact these local organizations listed in this document. Additionally, while my office is here to assist you with state and local services, your concerns on these federal actions need to be heard by your federal officials. Check out the list of our congressional and senatorial officials and contact their offices for assistance or to let them know about your concerns. We’ve seen recently how advocacy and loud objections can lead to a course reversal or reevaluation by the president and his administration.

Don’t give up and don’t give in.

Know your rights and stay vigilant for your family and your community.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Video

I had the pleasure of meeting with Beth from VisionLink this week in Harrisburg to talk about the service they provide for our community and our neighbors across Philadelphia who suffer from vision loss. Click above to watch my brief discussion with Beth, and click here to find out more about the valuable assistance VisionLink can offer for you and your loved ones with vision impairment.

I had a great time visiting with students from Bartram High School this week!

It was great meeting with so many people last week at the Mayor Parker’s Town Hall that was in our district at Southwest Leadership Academy Charter School.

Wow! So many focused listeners at the read aloud at Children’s Playhouse in South Philly. I love encouraging kids to read and enjoy books – education is power and that starts with a love of reading.

Visiting so many of our local schools to talk about civics and the importance of government is a passion for me! I love to talk about how my office can help our community and the role of state and local governments in our day-to-day life.

What an honor to meet and speak with the great students who achieved perfect attendance at Penrose Elementary!

If you live in South Philly you may have seen Chris and Jalen from my staff walking the neighborhood and knocking on doors this week to speak with our neighbors and drop off information about the services and resources that our office can provide.

Don’t forget to check out our mobile sites at the bottom of this email to find out where we’re bringing the services of my offices closer to you! This week we were at the food pantry at St. Paul’s and Inglis Gardens.

PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Money Back in Your Pocket

Video

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program has made it easier for older friends and neighbors to stay in their homes and afford groceries, medicine, and so much more.

The application period for the 2025 program has just opened to get a rebate on your 2024 taxes or rent paid. Thanks to changes House Democrats fought for, more people are eligible, and the rebates are bigger than ever!

Give us a call, send an email, or stop by one of my offices to find out if you’re eligible. We can even help you apply.

State Grants Available

My office helps city officials and local organizations connect to state grants available to help them do their important work to improve our communities and the lives of residents. You can find a list of state grant programs that are currently open for application on my website. We update this list as new programs come online so check back often.

My offices are here to help!
