New Grant Awarded to Soergel Orchards

This week, Soergel Orchards, which has been a staple of our community for over 170 years, was awarded a $24,584 state grant to support the purchase of an agricultural drone. I am proud to support our local farmers and ensure they have the innovative resources they need to help all of us.

Protecting Vaccine Access in Pennsylvania
|
Vaccines have saved over 150 million lives in the last 50 years. Recently, I spoke to CBS21 on the danger of President Trump’s executive order undermining long-standing public health policy on vaccines and how I am leading efforts to protect vaccine access and insurance coverage in Pennsylvania.

Working with my Fellow Physicians – and other District Updates

As a physician-legislator, I am committed to encouraging advocacy by my fellow physicians. It was great to join Rep. Jeremy Shaffer at the Allegheny County Medical Society legislative update to discuss the important issues facing my fellow physicians and how we can act in Harrisburg to support them.

Veena and I were honored to join Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor and his family at the University of Pittsburgh’s India Day celebration. Thank you to the Indian Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Exchange Programs Committee and the Indian-American community for their warm welcome and positive contributions every day to our region.

Veena and I also participated in the NextGen Hindu Youth Leadership Conference at the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Pittsburgh. As a member of the Hindu community, I appreciated the opportunity to speak about how my faith influences my role as a state legislator and provide lessons for the next generation of leaders in our region.
|
Meeting with young leaders is one of my favorite parts of this job. Elena and Arjun, two North Allegheny students who are also Junior Town Council Members in Franklin Park and McCandless, discussed the importance of civic engagement by young people. I support their efforts to enact pre-registration for those age 16 and above in Pennsylvania to allow young adults to take part in our democratic process as soon as they turn 18.

Local Students Win the KD Quiz Championship

Jason Liu, Leonardo Yu, and Tyler Gates, all recent graduates of North Allegheny, were featured earlier this week on KDKA after winning the KD Quiz championship. You can find video of their conversation about the competition here.

Pittsburgh Tomorrow to Host Local Homecoming
|
Pittsburgh Tomorrow will be hosting Pittsburgh Homecoming, a weekend celebrating fun, culture, and city-wide pride from September 18th – 20th that aims to bring would-be Boomerangers back to Pittsburgh and increase the chances they'll move back to help build our region.
Out-of-town attendees will receive two free tickets to iconic local events and centers, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Carnegie International, Fallingwater, Phipps, Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, August Wilson Center, Children's Museum, Pittsburgh Zoo, Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens, the Warhol, and the Kamin Science Center. They'll also get free admission to a future-themed welcome party at 7 p.m., on Friday, September 18th.

Franklin Park Wants to Hear from You

The Franklin Park Recreation Board is seeking input on how to improve the quality of the borough’s recreational opportunities, park facilities, and trails. The survey is open to residents, business owners, workers in Franklin Park, and anyone who frequents the borough’s parks.
The survey can be completed here. Responses are due August 31st.
