Every election is important, and 2025 is an odd-numbered year, which means the November 4 election is a municipal election, with county and local officials, judges, and magisterial district judges appearing on the ballot.

October 20 is the last day to register to vote in the upcoming election.

State Budget Impasse Puts PAAR In Crisis

On Thursday, I joined advocates and survivors at a rally calling for immediate action to pass the state budget and deliver the funding our rape crisis centers need. Pittsburgh Action Against Rape and centers like it provide lifesaving support. They should not be forced to choose between paying staff and answering calls for help.

State Senate Republicans’ refusal to pass the budget is harming support services for survivors. They have to stop playing politics with real people’s lives.

Solidarity with Workers on Strike

On Wednesday, I stood with the striking workers from Greco Steel, who voted to unionize but whose employer refuses to negotiate or even recognize their union. I am proud to support them and defend their right to organize. I will always stand with working people.

Earlier this month, I was excited to vote for a bill (H.B. 145) that would allow striking workers to receive unemployment compensation. It passed the PA House with bipartisan support and now awaits action in the Senate.

NHCO Legislative Breakfast

I was pleased to sit on a panel with Reps. Lindsay Powell and Arvind Venkat at North Hills Community Outreach’s annual leadership breakfast, where local leaders and nonprofits shared the real challenges they are facing, from housing and food insecurity to funding barriers. We discussed the difficulties facing our communities when it comes to housing, food insecurity, public transit, and more. Thanks to NHCO and everyone in our community working to lift up our neighbors!

Free Medicare Assistance

The Medicare open enrollment period is running now through December 7. This is a crucial time for Medicare recipients to join, drop, or change their plans.

Should you stick with your current plan? Are there lower-cost options for you? Navigating Medicare can be challenging, but PA MEDI is here to help you find the right coverage. As a statewide service operated by the PA Department of Aging, PA MEDI offers free, confidential, and unbiased services delivered by specially trained and certified counselors.

Call the PA MEDI helpline at 1-800-783-7067 or contact the Allegheny Area Agency on Aging to learn more.

Reminder: Changes to SNAP Requirements

I want to remind folks in our area that requirements for SNAP have changed. Visit this website to learn about these changes, how they will affect SNAP recipients, and how to report that you are meeting the work requirements.
