Condemning Federal Cuts to SNAP and School Meals
|
This week at the state Capitol, I spoke at a news conference condemning the federal reconciliation bill that will rip food away from children, families, and seniors here in Pennsylvania and communities across the nation.
As House Chair of the Legislative Hunger Caucus, I have dedicated a tremendous amount of time and energy to learning about what policies would be most effective at combating hunger, and this bill is moving us entirely in the wrong direction.
Food insecurity is already worse now than it was during the pandemic because we eliminated the pandemic-era expansions to SNAP and the school meals program that put us within striking distance of eliminating hunger.
Any federal elected officials that voted for this bill made an active policy choice to increase hunger in the United States.

Legislation Protecting Consumers and More
|
While we wait for the state Senate to come back to the table and finish the work of passing the state budget, the PA House is continuing to advance bills like the ones below to protect firefighters, safeguard consumers, support new moms, and more.
You can learn more about the more than 200 bills we’ve passed this legislative session at pahouse.com/deliveringforpa.
|
H.B. 1553 – Capping overdraft and insufficient funds fees on bank transactions.
H.B. 129 – Requiring a service company to clearly and conspicuously provide the consumer with the option to opt into, rather than opt out of, a service.
H.B. 1234 – Supporting new moms by expanding Medical Assistance (Medicaid) to cover blood pressure monitors for home use as a pregnancy-related service.
H.B. 1261 – Guarding the health of firefighters by reducing their exposure on the job to certain chemicals.
Remember that in order to become law, these bills must also be passed by the state Senate and then approved by the governor.
|
My bill to create a state-run insurance program for landslides and sinkholes recently made some exciting progress on its path to becoming law and I expect it will soon be voted on by the full PA House! Stay tuned.
