Who holds the power in government?

The turmoil that has surrounded the Trump administration has had profound and devestating effects throughout the country. Now, because of the federal government shutdown – two million people in Pennsylvania who rely on SNAP will go without food in November.

Republicans control the White House, the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate – this crisis is theirs to own.

If you need help getting food, please see this link for a list of food resources in our neighborhood.

I urge you to contact Senator Dave McCormick and tell him to stop the political games – that real people will suffer under the federal government shut down.

Just know that I and the PA House Democrats are working hard for you.

New federal work requirements for SNAP recipients

Since Sept. 1, 2025, some SNAP recipients must meet work, education, or volunteer requirements.

Some recipients who otherwise would not meet the requirement may be exempt.

Per DHS, a recipient’s benefits will not be cut without notice from the department and an opportunity to update their case information. SNAP beneficiaries should make sure their address and other contact information are current with both the DHS and the US Postal Service.

Check your voter registration status and get to the polls this November

I was with my colleague State Rep. Amen Brown and City Commissioner Omar Sabir at 52nd & Market Street speaking to people about the importance of voting in the Nov. 4 election and every election.

Remember, elections happen more than just every four years! Make sure you have a plan to vote. You can request a mail-in ballot and more by clicking here.

The city has made access to voting easier by opening 10 satellite voting offices across the city. The closest ones to our neighborhood are the 8th and 9th Council Districts.

Conversational Café

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came to my Conversational Café! Neighbors joined my office to hear from experts about creating a will, estate planning, and how a power of attorney works. We had this installment at Batchelor Brothers & Jones 7112 N. Broad Street.

Having these conversations now will leave your loved ones with fewer burdens later.

Q&A with "Seasoned Saints"

I was happy to participate in a Q&A session with my senior citizen “Seasoned Saints” at Beloved St. John Evangelistic Church. Proud to have such engaged constituents and to have these important conversations with our neighbors.

Vision Zero works

Happy to join Council President Kenyatta Johnson, Councilmember Anthony Phillips and State Rep. Napoleon Nelson for a trip to Hoboken, NJ to see first hand the results of their Vision Zero Strategy – it’s working! Hoboken has had ZERO traffic deaths since 2017.

We saw how their Vision Zero strategy is saving lives and creating safer streets for everyone and how it’s possible to do the same in Philly!

Uplifting small businesses in PA

This week, I visited the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce with colleagues from the Philadelphia House Delegation, state Reps. Tarik Khan and Andre Carroll, and Sen. Vincent Hughes, to hear from local business owners about how we can support small businesses throughout PA so they can thrive.

We’re here to empower small businesses so they can continue to serve their communities.

We’re working together to make it easier to build, hire, and succeed right here at home in Pennsylvania.

I want to bring state government resources to you! Please contact my office so we can visit your small business!

If you need assistance with any state government-related program, please don't hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,
